Synopsis

Irresponsible high school teacher Miss Yukari has two new students in her class. The first is the ten year old child prodigy Chiyo. The second is the not-quite-all-there Ayumu, a transfer student from Osaka, who despite not living up to the class' stereotypes of Osakans gets quickly nicknamed 'Osaka'. Other notable members of Yukari's class include the wild Tomo, her sensible friend Yomi, the quiet, cat-loving Sakaki, and Sakaki's adoring fan, Kaorin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic anime., 30 Sep 2004
By A Customer
Azumanga Daioh is a real gem of an anime. It's cute without being over the top and funny without trying too hard. It has a pace unusual to most anime, most likely picked up from the manga (which is also very good, I recommend you buy it in addition to the series) - which is a large collection of four panel strips, with an underlying plot line. The characters are all very loveable, with a refreshing lack of typical anime stereotypes (The perpetually cute and happy chiyo-chan excepted from this statement). The basic plot of Azumanga Daioh is that of a group of schoolgirls', and two of their teachers', daily routines and misadventures. And it's funnier than you'd think.

The sub is highly recommended for this, though there are some cultural differences - the translators notes should explain these though. The dub is really not worth mentioning, however.

It's sweet, funny and heartwarming. Who wouldn't want to buy Azumanga Daioh?

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages (if you are broad-minded), 6 Feb 2005
By A Customer
My ten year old daughter loves this DVD. So does her 14 year old sister. And her 18 year old brother, and my wife and me. These little stories are told at a gentle pace, with a quality of animation barely better than South Park, but there are unexpected depths and risks here (to which, thankfully, my ten year old is oblivious--as was undoubtedly intended). For instance there is an openly paedophile teacher, and a lesbian crush. And the pendulous breast-motion of the older girls is subtle, but it didn't get there by accident either. And yet the stories are entirely innocent. Disney this ain't, but nor is it crude or offensive. In it's way it is quite real. Take a chance on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing., 1 Jun 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I came to this DVD via the manga version of the series which in turn I bought because I'd been so impressed by 'Yotsuba&!' by the same author (a Yotsuba&! anime would be superb!). The manga is good but nowhere near as engaging as the anime. I bought the full series box set from an Amazon marketplace trader (Caiman) in NTSC form and I watched the first disc last night: I'm still laughing. The opening titles are the maddest yet most uplifting thing I've ever seen: the title song can only be described as the Christ to Crazy Frog's Anti-Christ and is astonishing in it's uber-pop nature. I urge you to watch the series in Japanese with subtitles if only for the utterly ludicrous and delightful translation of the title song: worth the price alone!
The series is marvellous: very well voiced (Japanese) indeed and beautifully animated in a subtle and easy way. The characterisation of the girls is great, Osaka in particular who didn't work as well in the manga version.
In conclusion: this is a very well made and fun anime that should appeal to most thinking people. No mecha though, just very psychopathic felines!
