5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite SLF album., 22 Jun 2008
By J. Logan (Kilmarnock, Scotland.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In my humble opinion. This was the peak for me after this it was all downhill. The other reviewers have made some of their own points of views clear, I don't agree with some of them, nonetheless i do respect their right to express their view point. However I will say, I love and still hold is album deep in my soul.

Not to take anything away from Jake, Ali and Henry. BUT, LISTEN TO THE DRUMMING ON THIS ALBUM !!!

Jim Reilly really was sadly missed when he moved to America. It was never the same again for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Begining of the end, 28 Nov 2007
I have listened to this album on and off for the last few years now, but still it doesn't really grab me. I know Jake Burns regards this as his best album and although there is potential i think it is badly let down by filler tracks. The album starts off excellent with the classic 'Roots Radics Rockers Reggae', 'Just Fade away' another well written and put together track which really gets you moving, and the instrumental 'Go For It' is enjoyable to listen to with the vast variety of sounds wacked in to it. But the rest of the album just doesn't have it. 'Gate 49' is a very weak song and one that quite annoys me, you are better off listening to 'No Change' from their 2nd album 'Nobodys Heroes'. It just feels they could have done so much more with 'Go For It', but is sadly lacking. If you are new to SLF and already have 'Guitar and Drum' and want some of their older stuff then I would advise you go for 'Nobodys Heroes'or 'Live at Aberdeen'. All the best

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative SLF, 13 Dec 2007
By VMR (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This is one of my most adored albums of all my music collection. SLF changed their style with this album and as is well known it is not as abrasive as their early material. It is however true to SLF in that it is completely original. This album has a subtly great guitar sound which changes throughout the album. As always there are two guitars to provide the wall of sound which characterises this sort of music. The difficult to define constant rhythm guitar that is also present on Hanx! features on this album. The music is difficult to classify, not really punk, not HM it reminds me of the Clash's "Give `em enough rope". Like that album there are also classics on this one. The instrumental title track, "The only one", the hit "Just fade away" and the highly complex "Safe as houses", a song so difficult and intricate that SLF sometimes made a mess of it performing live. There is a fine energy about this album and you find yourself lifted by the fast playing of songs like "Roots radicals rockers and reggae" or "Kicking up a racket". The album ends with a memorable SLF finale in the form of "Piccadilly circus". Social messages are a part of this as is normal with SLF; their song writing always reflected their experiences of life and their attitudes towards various issues. The style of songs like "Silver lining" and "Gate 49" show a change of style within the album to less rock orientated music, the sort that became the later "Now then..." album. "Gate 49" also contrasts "Safe as houses" by being relatively simple. Fine lyrics/guitar sounds and artwork makes this an essential for any SLF/Rock music fan.
