5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Punk Pop, 8 Feb 2006
By Mr. Peel M. Taggart "Peel Taggart" (Isle of Man) - See all my reviews

My friend Tristan dared me to write a review for this - we were both astonished that no-one had done so to date. This is classic power pop/punk pop/whatever, and whilst its not as raw as the earlier stuff, the basic material is just as good, even if the guitars aren't as loud. Hanx.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding, 11 Dec 2008
By P. Gibson "Ageless New Romantic" (Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first point to make about this is that you are getting a wonderful package for your money. This CD combines both the original LP and the 'Listen' EP which preceded it. When it came out, the EP reminded me of 'The Cost of Living' by the Clash. Not just because the two bands had similar musical influences but also reflecting my joy that each EP contained four really good songs rather than one standout and some dross space fillers. In my humble view, 'Sad Eyed People' is better than the EP's title track and that is saying something. The LP itself contains some of my my favourite SLF material. I saw them live at Camden and loved wailing along to 'Gotta Getaway', pogoing to 'Alternative Ulster' and belting out 'Nobody's Hero' but the highlights of the band's recording career surely came with 'Bits of Kids'. This song is the perfect post-punk fusion of slow melodious beginning and high impact chorus with raucous harmony. OK so it might not be as 'heavy' as their earlier material but neither is it a Stranglersesque change of direction. There are still plenty of great guitar riffs elsewhere on the LP and Jake balls out 'Is That Why You Fought The War?' with all the passion of yesteryear. Similar product, more maturity. Buy it!!!
