I have to say that most remastered/remixed albums offer very little in the way of improvement on the original recording. However, I am pleased to say that in this case this new remastered version of a classic metal album is the dogs. For a start, as soon as wake up dead kicks in you can feel the benefit of the remastered mix. Where the original mix was ok, it was a bit flat, this mix helps bring out the power of the individual intruments and highlight the quality of the musicians. You can feel the double kick drum work from Gar (a most underrated drummer) and the thick heavy bass of Junior Ellefson.
The additional mixes stuck on at the end of the album are worth having, but not that essential.
Overall, worth purchasing and at £6.99 a bargain with the addition of new artwork and extended linear notes.
Lets hope Slayer get around to doing the same with Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits, another couple of classic metal albums badly in need of a makeover.

`Peace Sells...' is without doubt one of the defining albums of the whole thrash scene, in fact one of the best metal albums of the 80's...no wait simply one of the finest metal albums of all time, simply put; life affirming. After the good but scrappy debut `Killing is My Business...And Business is Good' Megadeth really raised the bar and in my mind made the best record of 1986.

Rather than Metallica who were focusing on increasingly progressive songs and Slayer who went for just straight ahead stripped down brutality, Megadeth provided a sort of best of both worlds, being more musically proficient than any of their contemporaries as well as having tight and concise songs which could also rip your bleeding head off. No matter how technically brilliant Megadeth were, no one did angry better than Megadeth to be blunt Dave Muistane had issues. Megadeth was a band formed with the intent of revenge and they sounded like it.

`Peace Sells...' is Megadeth's finest album most of the songs here have now transcended into the realms of true heavy metal classics. In fact all the bands actual own compositions are fantastic only the ill advised cover of `I Ain't Superstitious' lets the side down, this song is an old blues standard but I think Megadeth based their version on the Jeff Beck Group's. Now Chris Poland can nail Beck's licks but Muistane sure as hell can't sing like Rod Stewart, so on the whole it just comes across as a bit of a novelty. But aside from that minor blunder this is all stellar speed metal. `Wake Up Dead' kicks things off in excellent fashion, it's a lovely piece of vitriolic metal with some of the best instrumental sections ever.Read more ›

I know I know - loads of you are going to argue and claim that Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction or Killing is my Business are on a par, but nope, this is the album where Mustaine and cohorts hit the musical jackpot. Fantastic songwriting, great riffage, awesome solos and that Vic Rattlehead cover is immense on a sleeve or as a t-shirt.
Wake Up Dead - immense. The Conjuring immenser.
Peace Sells - archetypal thrash classic where Mustaine spits the vocal with true venom.
Devil's Island - another great record, rightly quoted by British DJ Tommy Vance as one of the best thrash moments.
Black Friday - oh my God. Has to be in my top three tracks of all time by any band, period.
When an album opens with that sort of consistent quality what's not to like?

A classic. Possibly the best Megadeth album ever made but it is a close call between their first 4 releases really. This was their Ride the Lightning, for want of a better analogy, and it is every bit as good. 'Wake Up Dead' is just a hammer in music form. 'The Conjuring' is death metal without being as convoluted or nuanced as death metal (the sort of material that bands like Cauldron are aping nowadays). Title track is my least favourite but it is nevertheless an awesome song. 'Devil's Island' feels like an also-ran but shears the enamel from your teeth all the same.

'Good Mourning/Black Friday' is both beautiful and dripping with evil. A perfect, yet slightly off-key acoustic intro eventually erupts into a mixture of punk, metal, speed-metal and even post hard-core before it was created (?). Probably genius and there are no bands around today that can produce this kind of excellent track - unfortunately not even Megadeth. 'Bad Omen' is chunky and full of power. 'I Aint Superstitious' is the curio 'rawk' number. But it works very well insomuch that it is as twisted as every other track. And 'My Last Words' is a perfect, locomotive, semi-epic ending.

Most self-respecting metal lovers will of course own this and will have listened to it until their brains bleed. If you are not one of them, it is simply an essential album to have (it exists in the same category as Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Among the Living, Number of the Beast etc) and you must at once join the league of brain-bleeders!

"Peace Sells" is one of the best heavy metal albums ever made, and probably the best Megadeth album. However this (2004) remaster is awful, the bass has been re-recorded and sounds really processed and lifeless. The first time I heard it, I noticed immediately. It has none of the warm, famliar sound of the original recording.

This might not matter so much if you have never heard the original (the arrangements are still the same), but if you are familiar with the original recordings, it will stick out like a sore thumb. I personally couldn't get past it & obtained an older copy on CD. There is a difference between remastered and re-recorded, and when you buy a classic album, it's fair to assume you will be getting that recording.

Poor show & perhaps further evidence that megadave has lost his marbles. Seek the original!
