Amazon.co.uk Review

Will & Grace debuted with a controversial splash because one of its two lead characters is gay--but smart writing and topnotch performances, not politics, have made the show a hit. Two neurotic and sharp-tongued urbanites--gay lawyer Will (Eric McCormack) and straight interior designer Grace (Debra Messing)--delight in their volatile but enduring friendship as they share a sumptuous New York apartment. Sweeping into the mix are Will's unapologetically queeny friend Jack (Sean Hayes) and Grace's wildly eccentric assistant Karen (Megan Mullally). Much like Seinfeld, the humour on Will & Grace springs from self-obsession, petty jealousy, and compulsive interfering in each other's lives--basically, the building blocks of human nature. The show's writers apparently feel compelled to keep the lead characters warm and likeable in the usual sitcom mode (which hardly seems necessary, as McCormack and Messing are naturally engaging). As a result, it's Jack and Karen who get free reign to be truly obnoxious and ridiculous--which, of course, makes them incredibly funny and charismatic. Hayes and Mullally rise to the occasion, ripping through absurd situations and arias of narcissistic wit with dazzling panache.

Will & Grace's plots routinely center around scenarios that could feature a married couple or two same-sex roommates: Will and Grace bicker over buying a dog, find their relationship tested by apartment renovations, or discover they're both pursuing the same guy--standard sitcom material that the gay factor gives a clever spin. Though their relationship gets in the way of their sex lives, the two take so much pleasure in each other's company that they can't help but stick together--a surprisingly chaste theme for such a culturally groundbreaking show, but one that Will & Grace's addicted audience undoubtedly appreciates. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start to a great sitcom, 21 Feb 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Back in 2004 when Friends finished there was a gap in my Friday night TV watching (back in the days when I was skint and couldn't afford to go out on a Friday and Saturday night) and this was soon filled with a programme I'd never seen before. This programme was 'Will & Grace'. After watching a few episodes we were instantly hooked and decided to try out the DVDs. We've started watching them again now from the beginning and they are still as funny and entertaining as they was when we first watched them 4 years ago.

The show is about a gay lawyer (Will) who has recently broken up with his long-time boyfriend, and his best friend (Grace) who is a designer and in a bad relationship which results in her leaving her fiancé at the altar. Grace then moves in with Will and so sets the foundations of show. As well as the two main characters there is Will's friend Jack, who is also gay and constantly in-and-out of various jobs whilst he is trying for his dream as a stage actor. Then there is Grace's "assistant", the rich alcoholic Karen.

The show has genuinely funny gags and sketches that has me in stiches in every episode. The dialogue is fast flowing and extremely quick off the mark with some really clever come-backs and one-liners. The characters are also all very likeable and each have certain characteristics that are so unique to this sitcom that it actually makes it even funnier than the likes of Friends and so many others like it. Although it's not as good as Frasier (probably my favourite US sitcom), this is a highly enjoyable and very re-watchable show that is a must-watch for anyone looking for a good laugh and a great series to get into - especially now as you can get it for under a tenner!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must see show, 6 Feb 2005
Will and Grace has filled the gap left by the ending of Friends, without evern trying. The stories are well written and often having me crying with laughter. The characters are superb and the actors perfectly cast.

For anyone who has been living underground for the last few years and has managed not to watch Will and Grace, or if you love it like I do, buy the DVD's as you will laugh over and over again

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 29 Dec 2004
Will & Grace has always been one of my fave shows, and I couldn't wait to get it on DVD.

An excellent series of 2 gay men in New York, with a straight female friend.

Will is a single professional guy, who can't find love. Grace is a single female who can't find love. The fact that they love each other is irrelvant. Jack and Karen add a load of laughs, and are more funny together than the 2 characters in the main role. (Would love to see a spin off series about Jack and Karen !)

The extra features on the DVD's are a bit sparse and disappointing - in fact they're the same on every disc !
