Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Sony has announced the first in a brand new series of quality Cyber-shot cameras that will appeal to the more traditional photographer. Sony's engineers have combined a high quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with a 3x optical zoom in a robust yet compact aluminium metal body. In addition the new Cyber-shot W1 benefits from the latest technology in the form of Sony's powerful Real Imaging Processor and a 5.1 effective Megapixel Super HAD CCD for superior image quality, increased stamina and rapid camera operation. These superb elements are combined with greater creative freedom such as manual exposure control. However, one of the Cyber-shot W1 camera's greatest attributes is the large 2.5-inch LCD which makes the camera significantly easier to use in terms of framing and reviewing pictures as well as setting menu functions.

The large 2.5-inch LCD takes up much of the rear profile of the camera. This is ideal for accurate framing of pictures and allows for generously sized menu screens to give easy access to camera functions. In addition this convenient screen becomes a great photo viewer with which to review and share your images. The smartly styled Cyber-shot W1 manages to incorporate an innovative Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens in its compact metal body. This precision optical system is supplemented with an optimized mechanical design for a highly compact and reliable operation. At the heart of the camera is the Real Imaging Processor, bringing excellent usability and Stamina power efficiency to the new Cyber-shot W1. Engineered by Sony to improve battery performance, it works in conjunction with the two supplied rechargeable Ni-MH batteries to provide up to a surprising 340* shots from just one charge. As well as being optimized for low power consumption, the Real Imaging Processor enables the camera to speed up operations such as start up time, shutter interval and shutter release time, meaning that you'll be far less likely to miss that important shot. The Image quality is also improved by the new processor, with the result that pictures have improved focus, at the correct exposure and will display more faithful colour reproduction. In addition, the processor allows the Cyber-shot W1 to capture a high-speed burst of nine shots when in the high quality Fine mode and a fifteen image-burst in Standard mode. The Real Imaging Processor also enables the W1 to record high-resolution video using MPEG Movie VX Fine (640 x 480, 30 frames per second), which is great for played back in full-screen on a TV. MPEG Movie VX Fine is dependant on the use of optional Memory Stick Pro storage, but the recording time is only limited by the capacity of the media.

Shots in difficult conditions are now worry-free with six different Scene Selection modes. These settings allow you to automatically prepare the camera to match the demands of the shooting situation and are preset for occasions like a trip to the beach (Beach mode) or for example with the new Candle mode great for pictures taken during a candle-lit birthday. Other modes include Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap and Landscape. You'll always be sure of a clear picture too, as the camera uses five focussing points in the frame for auto focus performance to have more accurate focus and a sharper image.

Sony products are designed to connect quickly to each other and to the world beyond so that users can easily enjoy the benefits of digital networking. Digital images in this Cyber-shot camera can be saved to removable storage in the form of Sony Memory Stick and the optional Memory Stick Pro, capable of transferring your images between a wide range of Memory Stick compatible products. Additionally the Cyber-shot W1 is equipped with a USB 2.0 hi-speed interface, which connects the camera by cable to a compatible PC for fast image transfers. The handy AV out feature on the Cyber-shot W1 allows simple connection directly to a TV. The Cyber-shot W1 also supports the industry standard PictBridge technology. This makes it possible to connect directly with a PictBridge printer via the USB cable, enabling you to print your images without using a PC.

    5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful product, 31 Oct 2004
By SC Pullen "umass" (hitchin, herts) - See all my reviews

    what an absolute stunner!

    - wonderful design, the black (partial silver front) casing a great alternative to all the silver out there
    - quality carl zeiss vario-tessar lens. no further explaination needed
    - fantastic, well defined high quality pictues
    - 2.5inch screen. you really can't appreciate the size until the dsc-w12 is placed next to a 'normal' size lcd on other cameras. to think such a small camera can accomodate such a large screen
    - great to have the manual options associated with slr cameras available to use, if the automated pointing & shooting is just too easy
    - menus are clear, well laid out & a breeze to use
    - option to add extra lenses & filters
    - batteries supplied keep their charge for an awful long time & you get two additional supplied

seriously consider this camera. for the price, as i have said, it is stunning.

i've previoulsly used canon digital's & so nearly went for the 500 like the other reviewer. but sony are producing fine cameras for todays market & i believe this is one of the finest you can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Stunner!, 13 Oct 2004
By Brian "bpm333" (Belfast NI) - See all my reviews
This is a fantastic piece of kit. I have owned five digital cameras, upgrading over the years and generally being very satisfied with each newer model. My last one was a slight disappointment, it was a Konica 4MP model, but this Sony is bar far the best I have owned.

I went for the DSC-W12 over the silver model (a) for appearance and (b) because at the time it was the same price as the W1 yet came with the extra batteries and case. Haven't needed the extra batteries yet, the battery is excellent, but it's reassuring having them nevertheless. The case is very nice and I favour it over a Lowe Pro case I already had.

Pictures - almost forgot! Very crisp and clear, vibrant colours. Shooting mostly in 3MP mode so far and not been disappointed. Menus are very intuitive and I have hardly had to use the manual. The LCD screen is of course the dog's doo-das, and a real pleasure to use. And for the posers, the camera attracts comment almost every time I use it - because it's different.

Almost tempted by the Ixus 500, but really glad now that I resisted the temptation. I am completely happy with my purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for everyone, 27 Aug 2004
By W. Brown "wendywoo545c" (Uk, Coventry) - See all my reviews

I bought this camera a few days ago and have so far found it to be brilliant.
Having studied Media and Photography, I found that this camera can do everything I want and more. I was mainly concerned with being able to fine tune things manually, such as focus, exposure and white balance, which is important to any serious photographer.
This camera is also great for beginners because even if you don't know what you're doing the camera will do most of the work for you and you will usually end up with great pictures.
It also really good that this camera had a standard view finder as well as the huge LCD screen. This means that if you are in bright sunlight you can still see what you are shooting.
I must admit the thing that swayed me to choose this camera was the 2.5" lcd screen; which looks amazing and is great for browsing back through your pictures.
Another feature I like about this camera is that you can play a slideshow of your pics directly onto your TV, great for when you have visitors. (holiday and baby snaps).
Basically I havent found a fault with this camera and I think its well worth the money.
