Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

For the first time for the MP3 jukebox the H300 series boasts a 260,000 colour 2" TFT LCD which supports a wide array of colourful icons and menus, bringing added convenience. All the advantages of a colour screen can now be yours through this great new product.

As the H300 supports the USB host function, data from other UMS devices can be directly transferred to the player through a single cable without having to use a desktop computer. All of you digital camera users who have been waiting for this function will be pleased to know that files can be transferred directly from portable USB devices such as the digital camera. With the addition of a browser function, this function has become even easier to use.

This easy-to-use external disk reduces waiting time with a faster transfer rate. By supporting the USB 2.0 interface, the player can transfer data at a maximum speed of 480Mbps. Since interfacing does not require a separate manager program as the player is recognized as a portable data storage, its use as an external hard disk is made even easier.

Considering the many attractive functions of the player, resisting the urge to own one will be difficult.

The colour screen can display 26 letters (13 Korean letters) horizontal and 10 rows vertical. The player provides a Text Viewer for displaying lyrics or e-books, an Image Viewer for viewing stored JPEG or BMP files, or for photos downloaded from a digital camera. SRS WOW introduces an excellence in bass and three-dimensional sound. You can create your favourite settings using the 5 preset EQ and user control EQ. With 20mW output, you will enjoy a world rich and powerful in sound

H300 Series uses lithium polymer batteries that can produce 16-hours of continuous play from 3-hour charges. There is no need for an adapter any more. Instead, with the USB cable connection, the player is charged automatically when connected to the PC.

The H300 Series features a radio function for listening and recording. Now you can record radio shows with the H300 model as requested from many H100 customers. Settings are saved for easy FM broadcast listening. Even on the move, you can enjoy crisp reception wherever you are. Now you can enjoy FM radio broadcasting anywhere in the world. Songs may be searched and played according to the artist, album, genre, and filename through the DB function. The player also supports the Winamp playlist enabling the user to create personalized albums.

The H300 makes it easy and simple to record voice with internal/external microphones, and other audio sound (such as CD, cassette tape or radio) with the analogue cable.

The Direct Encoding function directly connects to a CD player or other audio tools and converts the music into the MP3 format. AutoSync automatically categorizes and stores music into the MP3 format. Voice Detect supports voice recording, and enables the system to be turned on only when voice is detected, saving storage space and power consumption.

Compatibility with AGC(Auto Gain Control) makes recording capabilities comparable to a professional recorder; it captures sound from even at a distance and controls recording quality.

H300 is compatible with Lineout, which produces dynamic sound with its analogue cable connection to the speaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellen Product, 1 Dec 2004
By Mr. C. Lowe "S'Thom" (WOOBURN!!111) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
The iRiver, now where to start? I had been recommended to purchase this product by a friend of mine and I am ultimately glad that I did, otherwise I may have bought a iPod *shudders at thought*

The main features that drew my attention to this product were the colour screen, for, y'know like looking at colour and stuff

The microphone for all those times you may need one

The external battery pack run on AA bateries (which I was genuinelly interested in) to make sure that you can squeeze some extra juice out of the bad boy

And the Radio, which to be honest I didn't think i'd use much.

Before getting it I had undergone the painstakingly boring process of creating a folder for every leter of the alphabet then the artist beginning with that letter inside them and then the albums by that artist. And by jove am I glad I did that, it proved to make the transfer of music to iRiver very quick and easy (and disablign the ID3 tags made it quicker to load) and due to the fact that it is a portable hard drive I didn't have to use crap software like iTunes to 'Update songs'

So there I am, iRiver in hand, big grin on my face checking out my remote that leads to the head phones, so I start to listen, let me tell you from someone who has regularly listened to my friend's iPod, the sound quality is unmatched, crystal clear, even full volume is like being at a live gig, so basically I'm chuffed. The functionality is a tad fiddly it has to be said and nowhere near as 'slick' as the iPod but when you get used to it you can cruise through the songs like a true pr0.

After a few weeks of having it, regularly putting new songs on quickly, using it as a transport system to take my files from my workplace pc and move them onto my home pc and telling people how great it is I looked on the website.

Firmware upgradeable may not sound too slick, but you could not be more wrong, only yesterday did I 'update the firmware' allowing me to play AVI FILES with sound, it is now my own personal media player for music AND videos, albeit it is a tad fiddly converting files to AVI's and resizing them but there are tutorials on the iRiver website and who knows what the next upgrade will be?

In conclusion I feel that although the iPod may look nicer for the more shallow lot of you, in sound quality, extra features and general awesomeness the iRive in unsurpassed.

Definately buy one if you want a fantastic mp3 that will play videos at no extra cost

4.0 out of 5 stars Does everything I bought it for, 26 Nov 2004
By R. Taubman (England) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought the device as my first MP3 player, plus the ability to copy photos off my camera while on holiday.
I loaded on 1300 tracks and backed up all my photos and data from my PC and it not takes a while to boot up, turning off the database helps the boot time if your tracks are organised into folders anyway.
I find the sound just fine, and the ability to record from LPs by plugging the device in to the stereo downstairs and then carry them back upstairs to split if required, if the LPs are in very good condition the H320 will automatically split the tracks, but it sometimes misses the gaps when recording from LP's as they never really go quiet.
One use I had not considered before I bought it was the voice recording option. The Mic is very good and seems to work very well, when placed in the middle of a table at meetings. Great for proving who said what and the auto level works well, everyone coming over loud and clear.
If you want a device just to play Mp3's this may not be the one for you, or if you judge a device, by its packaging, if you want a device which does several jobs well, then consider the H320 or its bigger brother the H340.

A couple of words of warning, the US version's of these devices do not have the USB to Go, so can not be used to copy direct from cameras, key-drives etc, so make sure you are looking at a UK spec system when price comparing. Also check your Camera is compatible via the iRiver site, if you want to use that feature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little device, 21 Jan 2005
By Mr. L. F. Thompson "luke_t99" (Manchester UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Firstly, let me just say that this player is absolutely magnificent. When i first got the box through the post i was worried by the size of its packaging, thinking, oh, this player is going to be a brick. When i opened the box i was delighted to find out that it was so big due to the amount of stuff that comes with it!!!
Firstly, the accesories: you get the usual things, manuals, earphones (with inline remote control, no screen though), adapter and installation cd (not that you need it if you have windows xp) and a usb 2 cable for connecting the device to your pc. There are also some extra accesories, you get a strong carry case (this is good but it has an annoying belt clip that I can't get off, but this is only a minor problem, you can always get a new 3rd party case). You also get a USB host cable to use when taking pictures from a camera without using a pc in between (great feature), a line in/out cable for anologue recording, an external mic (great for recording lectures and business meetings etc) and lastly a great external battery pack. This battery pack is large and makes the device totally un pocket friendly but the only time you will really use it is on a long trip in a plane or car. It charges the internal battery by its 4 AA batteries. It is a worthwhile feature for extended battery life which is always a good thing. There is nothing worse than being stuck half way through a journey only for your battery to run out!!!!!!
Next to the player itself. Firstly, i find it very pocket friendly. It isn't the smallest on the market, but its smaller than my wallet which is always in my jeans pocket, so therefore i conclude that it's pocket friendly. It does have a bit of weight to it, but i like a bit of feel in products like this. I know it's in my pocket, but it doesn't annoy me. It also makes it feel sturdy and well built. Next, the buttons. At first they are a bit confusing, like holding down the record button to get to a menu. It's not something i would think of doing to get to a menu, but after a few hours playing with it the controls become second nature. I will add that reading the instructions is a good idea. They arn't the best in the world but it is useful for learning all the little tricks.
The screen on this thing is fantastic. As soon as you turn it on it just looks like a quality piece of kit, and when using it, it doesn't dissapoint! It is really bright and easy to read. The screen is also good for pictures. I was comparing it to my mobile phone and the picture colour is so much more defined. It really does pick out the colours well. The player also plays video files. You have to download some firmware from iriver.com first which updates the player. This takes no time. It is quite a hassle to change the video type to get it to work but it is worth the effort. Lots of people say whats the point on such a small screen. I've found the screen to be more than capable and was quite surprised at how high the quality is. This is a FREE upgrade, it just takes a bit of work to implement. I imagine the best time for this feature is for going on holiday or long trips. Just for some entertainment other than music (or a distraction in lectures).
Next is the ease of transfer. And ease is the correct word! I had 8Gb of music on the player in minutes!!!!! And i like the file system. It's clear and simple. I will say that it is annoying that you can't make playlists on the player, although i've heard they might make a new firmware upgrade to change this(just a rumour though). But in any case you can make the playlist on your pc and put it onto the player. This is also a portable storage device (external hard drive if you will) so you can store other files and take them to other pc's or just use it for back up. The text viewer i personally use as an address book. I can't think of anything else to use it for. It is annoying though that you can't listen to music when you are viewing text or pictures.

All in all this is a great player. Why does it only get 4 stars? The price. I'd say it's better value for money than its main rival the ipod photo if you can live without the style (i can). However, as with all newly released technology it is as expensive as it will ever be. No doubt it will come down in price, so if you can't afford it now then no doubt it will be cheaper in a few months time. But i found it too hard to resist. And how pleased i am to have finally gone from my old mini disc recorder to what is essentially a multimedia device, not just mp3 player. Fantastic!!!!!
