Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

For the first time for the MP3 jukebox the H300 series boasts a 260,000 colour 2" TFT LCD which supports a wide array of colourful icons and menus, bringing added convenience. All the advantages of a colour screen can now be yours through this great new product.

As the H300 supports the USB host function, data from other UMS devices can be directly transferred to the player through a single cable without having to use a desktop computer. All of you digital camera users who have been waiting for this function will be pleased to know that files can be transferred directly from portable USB devices such as the digital camera. With the addition of a browser function, this function has become even easier to use.

This easy-to-use external disk reduces waiting time with a faster transfer rate. By supporting the USB 2.0 interface, the player can transfer data at a maximum speed of 480Mbps. Since interfacing does not require a separate manager program as the player is recognized as a portable data storage, its use as an external hard disk is made even easier.

Considering the many attractive functions of the player, resisting the urge to own one will be difficult.

The colour screen can display 26 letters (13 Korean letters) horizontal and 10 rows vertical. The player provides a Text Viewer for displaying lyrics or e-books, an Image Viewer for viewing stored JPEG or BMP files, or for photos downloaded from a digital camera. SRS WOW introduces an excellence in bass and three-dimensional sound. You can create your favourite settings using the 5 preset EQ and user control EQ. With 20mW output, you will enjoy a world rich and powerful in sound

H300 Series uses lithium polymer batteries that can produce 16-hours of continuous play from 3-hour charges. There is no need for an adapter any more. Instead, with the USB cable connection, the player is charged automatically when connected to the PC.

The H300 Series features a radio function for listening and recording. Now you can record radio shows with the H300 model as requested from many H100 customers. Settings are saved for easy FM broadcast listening. Even on the move, you can enjoy crisp reception wherever you are. Now you can enjoy FM radio broadcasting anywhere in the world. Songs may be searched and played according to the artist, album, genre, and filename through the DB function. The player also supports the Winamp playlist enabling the user to create personalized albums.

The H300 makes it easy and simple to record voice with internal/external microphones, and other audio sound (such as CD, cassette tape or radio) with the analogue cable.

The Direct Encoding function directly connects to a CD player or other audio tools and converts the music into the MP3 format. AutoSync automatically categorizes and stores music into the MP3 format. Voice Detect supports voice recording, and enables the system to be turned on only when voice is detected, saving storage space and power consumption.

Compatibility with AGC(Auto Gain Control) makes recording capabilities comparable to a professional recorder; it captures sound from even at a distance and controls recording quality.

H300 is compatible with Lineout, which produces dynamic sound with its analogue cable connection to the speaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars The H340 is the highest quality portable music player around, 3 Aug 2004
By Mp P. A. Walsh "El Zombarino" (UK (North)) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
If you want an iPod, get an iPod, this is not an iPod. If you want the highest quality portable music player around, then get one of these, you will not be disappointed. The iPod technology is running a couple of years behind the iRiver. And, as the iPod still retains the market lead, Apple has no reason to change it.

I never thought I'd ever give up on the iPod, but I eventually succumbed to one of these, partly because I was fed up with the 4 hour battery life on my iPod, and also because Apple weren't investing in the emerging technology, but mainly because of the difference in sound quality..

I have done a direct side to side comparison with the 'H' and my "old" 40gb 3rd Gen iPod. First with the supplied ear buds (Senheiser with the iRiver), then with a pair of Sony professional DJ headphones, a set of JBL creature speakers, off the Mac, and finally directly through a Harmon Kardon amp.

Admittedly the iPod ear buds are slightly better quality, but the difference is, almost undetectable, but I never used the Ipod ear buds anyway, I used proper headphones. In every other test though, the iRiver won hands down. Especially through the amp. The iRiver has SRS WOW digital sound enhancement, there are half a dozen preset equalizer options, tru-bass and a couple of user defined sound options too, plenty of choice, even for the average Joe like me.

Weight wise, there's about a 'half ounce' in it. Size wise, the iRiver is 4mm thicker but 3mm narrower and 2mm shorter, than the 40gb iPod. Not much in it. But the iPod scratches more easily and shows more when the dirt gets in it, I don't mean mud, just daily grime from your pockets, desk etc.

And if that isn't enough to convince you, the H series comes with a full colour screen, for viewing digital images. The iPod still uses dot matrix. The player is USB 1 host, so no need for a computer, between your camera and your player. But be aware, not all cameras are supported yet, keeping checking the site.

The H has a very reliable operating system, and the firmware is upgradeable, so you can take advantage of all iRivers future enhancements such as video codec support. iRiver adds new features to their firmware all the time, and are quite reactive to their user base, so when a new codec comes out, you get it quickly and for free.

As well as it's own file management software, 'H Manager' which operates through and adds features to Windows explorer, the H series also supports WinAmp play lists, so no fiddling around with 'smart playlists'. Why would you want to waste time rating individual songs, when you can quickly set up play lists, and as many as you want. You can manage the file/menu system however you want so your not tied to any particular structure like with other players.

And you can download using any Music site, you're not tied to the expensive and limited iTunes library.

As for the charger, I have had no problems, and you can charge directly from USB. And at 16 hours on a full charge, you're not going to be spending £100 on a new battery in a years time, unlike the iPod.

What else? Recording, there's a built in mic, and an external one included in the pack, you can record via Line-in or using the internal, sound quality (depending on the bit rate you select) is astounding. You can record from real life (concerts) and with direct MP3 encoding you can use the line-in for converting your vinyl/tape to MP3.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beast From iRiver, 9 Jul 2004
Well, this baby has a feature-set to kill for and a battery life about 3 times as long as the iPod 20/40g if the (many) reports from their customers are to be believed. The H340 is basically the iHP-140 with a facelift, USB charging, Radio-Recording, USB on the go (for porting camera pics from 'compatible' cameras without a pc) and a colour display. Compare it to the a similar priced to the iPod 40g and it wins hands-down. If they manage to focus on their firmware as effectively as they started with the iHP-100 series before they quietened down, then this machine should win all the fans it deserves. If you need a high-end player to house more than a stack of CD's, connects straight to your pc without software and lasts more than a couple hours on a charge, then there's only one choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb device, 5 Aug 2004
By Mr. K. L. Salt "Seadog" (Derbyshire, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Had my H340 for a week now and the more I play with it the more I love it.

Contrary to another review on here you don't actually need any software to download to the 340 - simply drop it into the dock and drag and drop your folders across - piece of cake :) And if you really do want to sort your music by genre, tempo, mood etc simply use Moodlogic and create a database driven library. But with support for multiple .m3u playlists (created via Winamp etc) this really isn't needed.

Other features worthy of note are:
    i) FM radio (recordable to the drive).
ii) USB1.1 host (plug in compatible digital cameras or any other complaint USB device and copy over files - works brilliantly with my ebuyer £7.00 card reader - no need to buy any more SD Cards!).
iii) Picture viewer - view the photos or any other JPG's on the 2" screen. To be honest my 2MB camera photos take a while to view.
iv) Built in internal microphone (also comes with an external one) - use it as a dictophone.

    v) Text viewer, copy over .txt files and view them on the screen.
vi) Loads of preset EQ settings.

    A few negatives:

    i) The interface isn't as intuitive as an ipod - but after you get used to it probably is more flexible.

ii) Very slightly thicker and not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the ipod.

iii) Included headphones ok but not brilliant. Hooked in my KOSS KSC-50 and it sounds incredible.

A workmate of mine recently purchased a 40GB ipod and is seriously thinking about selling it on ebay and getting a H40. He's spent apprixmately £120 on extras which come standard with the iRiver (external battery pack and Belkin card reader).

All in all this probably is the current King of HDD MP3 players, and, for about the first time ever, I'm 100% happy with what I've bought. :)
