This wonderful CD from the fabulous Naxos American Classics label is breathtaking. The music is extremely varied in temperament and tone.
The first pieces on the CD are by Aaron Avshalomov composed in the late 1920's and are entitled Four Biblical Tableaux. The music is richly orchestrated with the emphasis on woodwinds and strings.The style is similar to music you would expect to hear in a biblical movie and is very cleverly composed and orchestrated.

The second composition on the disc is by Sheila Silver and was written in 1985. This is a lovely melodic piece in three movements entitled Shirat Sara. This is very lyrical music and is really a symphony for string orchestra and solo violin.The orchestration is lovely and the music very song like in style.

The final piece is really a symphony for full orchestra and is for me the highlight of the album. Jan Meyerovitz Symphony Midrash Esther composed in 1954 is a tour de force for orchestra and one cannot but marvel at the wonderful themes and sparkling orchestrations it contains. This is a mighty work and is comparable in style to Rimsky Korsakov. The wonderful "Jewishness" sound to all the pieces on this CD make it a very special and totally unique album of gorgeous modern classical music.

I have not gone into too much detail regarding the actual music as Amazon have loaded samples for you to try before you buy but this is fast becoming one of my all time favourite classical CD's.

The entire album is richly orchestrated ,highly rhythmic and melodic as you would expect in an album entitled Jewish Tone Poems.I must however give a special mention to the sound on this CD. Naxos have always maintained in their recordings the integrity of the music and have never overmixed in the final production rather that they have relied upon excellent microphone positioning and the use of marvellous locations in which to record whether it be a historic church,concert hall or studio.

This album is no exception and I have to say that this is one of the most lavish sounding recordings I have ever heard. The sound is crisp and clear and has a certain warmth with no harshness and although recorded in different locations the sound and ambience is uniform and you would be hard pressed to find a better sounding recording anywhere.

This is a world premiere recording for all three works on this CD and if you like descriptive lyrical and tuneful music in a Romantic and Modernist style then this one is for you.I ordered my copy from Naxos Direct through Amazon and had the disc the following day and at an unbeatable price.
