Product Description

CD Description

Teen-pop sensation JoJo practically grew up on the talk-show circuit, getting her break by wowing Bill Cosby on KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS, an appearance that caught the eye of Oprah Winfrey. Eventually, the tenacious JoJo was signed to Blackground Records. Her self-titled debut is a consistent collection of infectious, peppy pop music with an R&B tint that places her in the style of Brandy.
The title of JOJO'sfirst track, the revved-up and funky "Breezy", sums up the spirit of the record, as JoJo's elastic vocals belie her age. She displays an uncanny ability to balance the sensuous and the sweet on the friendship-turning-into-love jam "Homeboy", and even shows a knack for ballads with a faithful rendition of SWV's 1992 hit "Weak". Sure, JoJo is young, but she proves herself to be a performer beyond her years on this strong debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jojo rocks!, 14 Aug 2004
By katy judd "katy" (surrey, england) - See all my reviews
I live in England, so I haven't heard too much about Jojo, but I do know she is releasing "Leave" in the UK soon. Based on this single I bought the album from amazon and it has not been a disappointment.
Lots of people say this album is pop, but I don't really think it is, it's way more r'n'b, especially songs such as "breezy" and "city lights." There is one sweet ballad and a few slower r'n'b tunes, and some faster ones, with a small hint of pop.
I haven' got really any albums like this, so it's quite fresh for me, but I really do like it. Some of the songs do remind me a little bit of Destiny's Child tunes, and one or two sound like some of Christina Aguilera's songs when she not very poppy.
If you like "Leave" or any of Jojo's other songs I would definitely recommend this to you.

Note: I would have given this album 4 ½ stars if I could, but amazon don't do halves and also he booklet with the album doesn't have any lyrics if you want to sing along!

BREEZY - An extremely good song, a great start to the album. This track is very r'n'b, in my opinion the bridge is the best bit. 10/10

BABY IT'S YOU - I love the beat to this, it's quite a simple song, but is catchy and real good. The first verse lyrics are effective, all about why everyone wants to be like a celebrity. 9/10

NOT THAT KINDA GIRL - The b-side to "Leave." This song reminds me of a song that Kelly Rowland sang, but not one of her singles. A mid-tempo song, with a cool chorus. 9/10

THE HAPPY SONG - I read loads of reviews and not that many people like this, I think it's really good. I love " da da da da " bit in the chorus. If you hear the title of this song, and you haven't listened to it you might think it's very loud and poppy, but it is seriously not, it is happy, but not in a over happy way! 9.5/10

HOMEBOY - One of the best, it's quite individual on the album. Very r'n'b, this is a favourite among fans, and I can see why, with great lyrics, a great tune and great vocals! 10/10

CITY LIGHTS - When I first heard this I didn't like it much, but I like it a lot now. This is quite fast and cool. Not much else to say. 8/10

LEAVE - I think the reason nearly everyone bought the album. An amazing song, but I'm sure you have your own judgement of this, so I won't go on. 10/10

USE MY SHOULDER - My least favourite. I kinda like this song, but the chorus is boring, and the tune is not very good. The is a pre chorus which is pretty bad, repeats everything about 4 or 5 times each, a little annoying, but still OK. 6.5/10

NEVER SAY GOODBYE - This isn't like any other song on this album, it is a sweet ballad, this is where Jojo gets more poppy, but who cares? The lyrics are cute, and her voice is really good on this track. I love it! 10/10

WEAK - Whenever I read a review this seems to be a favourite, but it isn't mine. If you like the original you should like this song, but I'm not that keen. The verse is a bit slow and dull, the chorus is good, but it doesn't really compare to the rest of the album. 7/10

KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON - This is written by Jojo and it's a really uplifting song, the message is just keep trying and someday you'll get to where you want to be. The lyrics are good and the song is catchy. 9.5/10

SUNSHINE - To me this sounds like Christina Aguilera's "Loving Me 4 Me" (not the lyrics, the tune.) I really like that song, so this is good. The line "Don't you go, don't you go no where" is cool, look out for it. This is also individual from the rest of the album. 9/10

YES OR NO - Co-wrote by Jojo, like "Sunshine." This is my third fave song, another very r'n'b song, there is a great line which is "You are not ready." This is very easy to understand and I'm sure a few people can relate to it. 10/10

FAIRY TALES - The lyrics are so good in this song, it's all about how fairy tales aren't real and it can put some stuff in perspective. Although the lyrics are really good, the song is kinda good, the verses, bridge and speaking part are good, but the chorus isn't that great apart from the "la da da dee" bit. 8.5/10

This album is just over 50 minutes long and I think you should seriously consider buying it if you like any of Jojo's songs.

LYRICS - 7.5/10
MUSIC - 9/10
VOCAL - 9/10

OVERALL- 90/100

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING...and Only 13!!!, 17 Oct 2004
This review is from: Jojo (Audio CD)
Im not much of a fan of pop music, BUT when it comes to American pop I take an interest in it for example Michelle Branch, Stacie Orrico, etc.
Ok, so Jojo maybe 13, but her age means nothing cuz this girl can sing, hit the right notes and I know for a fact this album will appeal to you if you're into quality british or american r&b.

Track Rating outta 10:

1. Butterflies = 6
2. Breezy = 10
3. Baby It's You = 10
4. Not That Kinda Girl = 9
5. The Happy Song = 6
6. Homeboy = 7
7. City Lights = 8
8. Leave (Get Out) = 10
9. Use My Shoulder = 7
10. Never Say Goodbye = 8
11. Weak = 10
12. Keep On Keepin' On = 6
13. Sunshine = 8
14. Yes Or No = 6
15. Fairy Tales = 8
16. Back And Forth = 7
17. Baby It's You (UK Bonus Track - w/Bow Wow) = 9

Overall I've gotta say that this girl is a breath of fresh air and it's not very often you such good talents....this album is well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm!!!, 3 Sep 2004
When i first heard "Leave" i was really feelin the song then i learnt she the girl that sang it was 13 i was a but taken back but for real what does a 13 yr old no about heartbreak n love? anyway....
Jojo has a FANTASTIC voice espeically for a 13 yr old comparisons to Coco (Of SWV) And Solange (Beyonce's sister)her debut is not overly great but its a pleasant one i admit its not my favourite style of music but i thought i'd give her a chance.
I think if she was older she would been taken a bit more serious shes signed to Blackground records home to artists such as Tank,Toni Braxton & the late Aaliyah maybe in the future (if shes still singing that is) she'll work with Timbo and Missy but for now jus' give her a chance i did but if your still not convinced
GO BUY Jill Scott - Beautifully Human Words and Sounds Vol 2 its a great album i admit Jill is better but give lil Jojo a chance ya never no she could be the next big thing who knows
