Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
On The Tipping Point, their sixth album, the Roots backslide a bit on the creative promise they showed with 2002's Phrenology. Instead of expanding into more ambitious and experimental areas--the way Outkast has, for example, the Roots tend to fall back to basics with vigorous, but ultimately conventional, lyricism. There are definitely some great moments here: the album opens with near-magic on "Star", a mesmerising song that is one of the finest of the group's career, and Black Thought is a one-man tour de force on "Boom!" where he mimics Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap down to their velour sweats. But The Tipping Point also has some of their blandest production ever, and, at 11 songs (plus two bonus tracks), the compactness of the album amplifies the problems. "I Don't Care" and "Duck Down!" in particular seem derivative and commercially tailored. The main thing missing here is an overall guiding concept, something the Roots have never lacked before. --Oliver Wang, Amazon.com

Album Description
The Roots return with The Tipping Point, the follow-up to last year's brilliant Phrenology, and it's a taut, funky and highly polished record full of great new tracks. The first single "Don't Say Nuthin'" is a classic slice of minimal hip-hop that showcases Black Thought's tremendous lyrical skill and features long-time Dr Dre collaborator Scott Storch. This album sees the Roots returning to what they do best; real hip-hop made by the finest rappers and players in the business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Thought secures his place in MC history, 15 Jul 2004
This review is from: The Tipping Point (Audio CD)
This album may not be the most complete album ever, nor is it by any means the best. It may even be fair to say that musically it is inferior to Phrenology in many ways. Some of the tracks fall short of what we have come to expect from the roots.

HOWEVER, other tracks on this album are simply superb. The opener 'Star', could easily be the best roots song of all time, while 'Somebody's gotta do it' will blow you away, both lyrically and musically.

While it may not be the progressive hip hop we have come to expect from the roots, it is simply great music. Black Thought has put his name in MC history, and his lyrics on this album will blow you away more than any other.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Roots Tipping Point, 12 Jul 2004

The Roots return with their 7th album The Tipping Point. This time around its less experimental than Phernology and its just straight up hip hop. TTP is short, like a hip hop album from 1988 with just 10 tracks + bonus tracks. Speaking of '88 my favourite track is 'BOOM' on which Black Thought does excellent impressions of legendary MCs Big Daddy Kane & Kool G Rap right down to the last lips. Black Thought seems to be on a mission on this release to put his name among the greatests MCs. The album kicks of briliantly with 'Star/Pointro' with its sly stone sample. The first single 'don't say nuthing' sounds nuthing like a roots track but it grows on after a few listens especially its catchy hook if it can be called that. 'Web' also has the same old school feel as 'BOOM' and BT attacks the mic with no mercy. There are lots of nice hooks through out such as 'stay cool', 'guns are drawn' and 'somebody's gotta do it' sang by devine the dude. The only thing missing this time around is the love joint which has been present on all other roots releases 'u got me', 'silent tretment', 'break u off', but also like the lack of scratch, rahzel & Malik B its not greatly missed. This album is definately worth buying for vets, newbies and diehards. Questlove's liner notes also give an insight on how tracks came about which makes a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rooty, 29 Sep 2004

The Roots return with the follow up to 2002's boundry bending experimental Phrenology. You may have thought the Roots were being brave by trying new directions on that album or maybe you thought they should have stuck to what they do best. If you're with the former rather than the latter you may be upset. The Roots have decided to return to their trademark hip hop band sound. The Al Hirt trumpet sample on Stay Cool conjures up the ghost of 1930s Cab Calloway and the Cotton Club. Boom is a cracking old school homage guaranteed to make even a dead man get up and dance. As the album progresses they turn thier hand to gangster style raps (Somebody's Gotta Do It) featuring Devin the Dude, block rocking party thumper Duck Down and reggae on Why. If theres any justice this album'll be bigger than ?uestlove's afro. Which is pretty damn big. Thats a young Malcolm X on the cover by the way.
