Formula 1 was left with a hole to fill after Jackie Stewart retired at the end of the previous season as a three times world champion, his natural successor Cevert was tragically killed in 1973 leaving the top spot open to any team who had the cars and drivers capable of winning. This meant that 1974 felt different to the beginning of the last few seasons, and this review shows us the drivers who had shuffled between teams to generate a freshness in the sport, there was a feeling that the newer blood would start to make themselves known.

This DVD tells a great story of the '74 Driver's Championship; Fittipaldi establishes an early lead, but with Lauda winning his first race - he was close behind and chasing. The Ferraris however suffered from reliability issues and though they started well, they struggled to even finish. Towards the end of the season the championship was wide open and several drivers were in contention to steal it from leader Fittipaldi. Ultimately though Fittipaldi held on and won it - a milestone for his new team McLaren.

These DVDs have so far made the best of the limited race footage they have but there is definitely more footage this time round, the video of the Monaco Grand Prix is fantastic. Speaking of coverage, there is great coverage of a pit stop. I've not so far seen one in this DVD collection and it was fascinating to see the difference between the slick operations these days and the man-handling of the car back then. The narration describes how Pit stops weren't common then as cars were expected to run on one set of tyres and were fueled to the end. Several comparisons are made between modern F1 and that of thirty years ago, the most humourous being a comment just before the ticket prices for Brands Hatch are displayed: "Those who have paid 21st Century Prices to watch a grand Prix may want to look away now".

In a nutshell: I hope the increase in racing footage is going to continue in the subsequent volumes in this set. A corking season in a sport which was shaken up after 1973 still has some old familiar faces on show with Jackie Stewart mingling with his old Tyrrell team and even Stirling Moss having a chat at the trackside. Oh - and Bernie Ecclestone had exactly the same hair-do back in 1974!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, But Only Because There Is No Other Choice, 1 Sep 2008

These season reviews are great if, like me, you like seeing off-track footage as much as the action from the races because that is what they consist of mostly.

Limited to one or two cameras at each race, there is an inevitable concentration on practice sessions and interviews. Do not expect lots of overtaking, accidents or on-track action.

That said, there is no other way to get footage of these years and, assuming anyone who is thinking of buying something like this is already somewhat knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the era, these films are of great interest. The commentary is very good, making the most of the somewhat limited visuals.

The acid test is that I have watched them all, all the way through, more than once. The price is high for the duration (30mins per year) but as I said, there is no other option if you want video for this era.
