What a disappointment! Instead of the quirky, interesting game that was Settlers I - IV, we get a poor quality clone of Age Of Empires. Everything from the heroes to the "spawning" of village centres is a ripoff of other games. The characters have gone from cute and unique to bog-standard human figures in silly clothes. There is even a Lara Croft double for Gods sake!

Who built this boring eye-candy? What happened to the evil scorched land? The Amazons? The good story lines? IMAGINATION??

It looks pretty. It plays dull. Somebody shoot the developer and get the old ones back.

oh dear, you get all excited over a game- (after spending YEARS playing settlers 4) and it doesnt quite live up to expectations. The actual game is ok, the interface is ok, and the animation is ok. Unfortunately the predecesser was ORIGINAL, great fun, massively varied and endlessly diverse- and this really doesnt match up. If you actually play your way through the levels its quite good fun, but there is no editor and the supplied free play maps are rubbish so there isnt actually ANYthing else worthwhile to do and seeing as i finished the game itself in three days that makes me a bit peeved. I think i shall go back to settlers 4 thank you.

Admittedly The Settlers 5: Heritage of Kings isn't much like the previous versions but then they were rather mediocre and didn't offer much variation in terms of objectives. I miss the wide variety of production methods available in the previous games and miss the mining rather than the new age of empires style resource collecting but then the game does other more game play by adding many objectives you find by talking to different people. The game isn't perfect but adds new excitement and from a games developers view opens up a new genre and appeals a broader audience. It's in the style of warcraft 3 and age of empires and you can now control a wider variety of army units.

I would give the game 70 - 75% and it is better in many ways to the older versions though I can see why people are disappointed how it isn't much like the older versions. The other reviews on this site are harsh and I suggest you try it for yourself if you've wanted it from the moment you heard it was coming out.
