(REAL NAME)
'Deidamia' is Handel's last opera before he turned exclusively to the world of the oratorio. It has been rather neglected but now has two complete recordings available of which this is the more recent. It is a really lovely work, full of wonderful music much of it upbeat and jaunty and consists of one delightful number after another. The story is largely comic but the heroine herself remains a serious presence through all the silliness surrounding her and her plight touches us.

Simone Kermes is just right in the title role I think. She has an unusual voice and a flair for the dramatic, pathetic in the slow numbers but also delightful and playful in her 'nightingale' aria. As Ulysees, determined to steal her disguised lover away from her, Anna Bonitatibus is fantastic - a really beautiful sound! The disguised Achilles is energetically sung by Anna Maria Panzarella and Dominique Labelle is delightful is the seconda donna Nerea. There is excellent support too from basses Furio Zanasi and Antonio Abete.

This is one of Curtis' happiest and most successful recordings - excellent from start to finish and miles better than the rather dreary Newport Classics version. One of my favourite Handel recordings ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent singing and dramatic conducting, 28 Sep 2007
One aria after another of magnificent singing. Kermes is spledid as Deidamia, and dramatically interprets her character with great poetry and shades of feeling. Panzarella is excellent as Achille. A truly amazing performance by Bonitatibus is almost beyond belief for its sheer vocal mastery and spectacular effects. The conducting is very well informed and dramatic and intense, although perhaps there is a slight understatement of what could have been greater baroque contrasts. This recording brings out hidden qualities in the score that one would never have imagined were present simply by reading the score. A great performance. A masterpiece of melodic invention and orchestration; you will want to listen to it many times.
