Don't stay away from the White Light. It's wonderful!, 13 Jul 2004
Think he is arrogant? think he get's too caught up in politics for his own good? Many people have their different views on Matt Good as a personality, but when it comes to his music, there are no questions, only answers.White Light Rock & Roll Review is just another masterpiece to be placed next to the name of Matthew Good, thanks to its musical powers that really do grab you and take you into each song, with each one taking you on a different crazy journey. Lyrically, as you would expect, this album is incredible. Pound for pound, song for song, there is nobody in the music scene that can attempt to touch Mr Good. His first solo effort, "Avalanche", was not Matthew Good Band as fans knew before, it was something different that somehow developed further and was simply mind blowing. Much as Avalanche wasn't MGB, White Light Rock & Roll Review, is not Avalanche, but you won't be surprised to hear it is still 100% Matthew Good. This album is a more back to basics rock and roll album, throwing aside the spine tingling orchestrial driven tracks to concentrate on guitar driven in any manner possible tracks that still take you on the same roler coaster that is a Matthew Good work. Each track is a comment on an aspect of life as Good sees it, and to be honest, he's mostly pretty accurate and you can't help but be taken back by what he says and how he says it. "Blue Skies Over Bad Lands" may well have the greatest lyrics i've ever heard. I read them BEFORE listening to the song and knew from them how great it would be. I wasn't wrong. This guy is a genius, and for the listener and reviewer it is the most dificult thing to explain to someone new to him. You just have HEAR and LISTEN to it, and find something in it for yourself. Every one is effected the same way but everyone takes something different also. Look out for tracks like "We're So Heavy", "Alert Status Red", "Little Terror" a great song about family ties and your children 'Mother,Your son he's a bad boy,Mostly a bad boy,But he's the one' great lyrics, great song. And then the truly amazing 8 minute phenomenom "Blue Skies Over Bad Lands". If you're already a fan you wont need me to tell you this album is a must have. But for the new fan or someone who's never heard of Matthew Good, this is VERY worth getting. It's possibly a more accessible album than some others (audio of being? avalanche?), with hidden treasures the more you listen to it. I wont compare this Album to any other Matt Good CD, becasue it simply can't be done. You just have to listen to it, and take it as it is.
