Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Prepare for the return of that cool swing sound--The Number One Swing Album 2004 is here: two CDs of classic swingin' tunes by the biggest names in music. This album contrasts the music of original old-time swingers such as Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Rat-Packer Dean Martin with that of the new wave of smooth crooners, such as Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Robbie Williams and Jamie Cullum, and proves to be a heady mix. This'll certainly provide a little class to accompany your summer cocktail parties, barbeques and soirees. --Paul Eisinger

4.0 out of 5 stars Swing will never die!, 11 Aug 2004
By A Customer
All swing fans will love this simply because it has a selection of the best ever songs, (Mack The Knife - need i say more?) but it can also appeal to a new generation as it includes performers such as Robbie Williams and Jamie Cullum, who don't do a bad job! Definately a good listen and if your kids haven't been a fan before now, maybe this will sway them!

2.0 out of 5 stars Better without Cullum, 16 Jul 2008
By Jock (Jakarta, Indonesia) - See all my reviews
This should be a classic, and the talent and material available should mean every track is a gem. Particularly because unlike most of these albums, they haven't tried to squeeze in 50 tracks with the inevitable reduction in quality from the padding. But sorry, there are some poor choices here. Jamie Cullum in particular just cannot sing! It's embarrassing. Obviously a gifted piano player and a performer with a precocious attitude that has done much to get him where he is (although he tries a little too hard and it often comes off stilted), but his voice! He is actually out of tune. Enough to make you hide behind the couch. The rest of the modern artists stand up pretty well: Krall and George Michael in particular, and there are enough gold standards in here from Darin and the rest that it would be worth a listen if you didn't have any of this material elsewhere. However, these are supposed to be some of the greatest swing tracks ever recorded and hence its hard to fathom why we have some mediocre versions mixed in. Presumably it's designed to appeal to a younger audience, but the argument doesn't stack up: Anyone interested in this music will be happy to listen to a performance from 50 years ago if it's the best of the genre. Overall, a couple of bad choices, and a few poor ones spoil the album, and it's certainly not good value at that price.
