Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
To the 5 Boroughs, the Beastie Boys' first LP in six years, is a thunderous return to form. Dispensing with the electro experimentation of the more challenging Hello Nasty, the boys get back to basics, seeming to sense that the time is exactly right to launch the return of their old-skool sound. Lead single "Ch-Check It Out" blows open the doors, with its booming meaty beats and funky vibes, reminding us just how exciting the rap-rock genre was back in the day when these guys helped pioneer it, before all the whiney "Limp Linkins" came along and commodified it.

To the 5 Boroughs captures the sound of the Beasties in their prime, spitting invective (as on the Bush-baiting "That's It That's All") over urgent bass-driven cuts with fortysomething voices that are as fresh as ever. They may be less concerned now with the Party than with a picnic ("grilled cheese", "flapjacks", "matzoh", "cholla", "falafel", "gorgonzola", "spaghetti" and "chicken tikka" all get a shout), but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. With age has come Buddhist-influenced wisdom, and gone are the misogynistic tendencies of old; these days they're more likely to be rapping about "the beach" rather than a bitch. Though these Beasties bring a message of love ("we gotta keep the party goin' on; all lifestyles sizes, shapes and forms") they're tighter and truer than ever. --Paul Eisinger

CD Description
Sixth album from the original and best whiteboy rap outfit comes six years after 'Hello Nasty' and is a paean to their home city of New York. Allegedly more "mature" than their previous output, this is a straight-up hip hop album without the nostalgic forays into punk of yore and features a more political lyrical slant than before. Includes the single 'Ch-Check It Out'.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Return, 18 Aug 2004
By Alex (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews
With 'To The 5 Boroughs' the Beastie Boys have returned, and yet again shown they're incapable of making a bad record. 'Licence To Ill' and 'Pauls Boutique' hold their own in the history of hip hop, while the next 3 records ('Check Your Head', 'Ill Communication' and 98's 'Hello Nasty') showed the Beasties talent in a variety of ways.

So, 6 years on, and what's different? Well firstly, TT5B remains a focused hip hop record throughout, mixing new technology, their old skool past, and trademark rapping over a variety of beats. Opener, and first single, 'Ch-Check It Out' is everything you'd want from the Beasties. Brass sample circle in and out over a heavy, fast and old skool beat, with the Boys rhyming in turns rather skillfully...and also boasts a cracking chorus, letting you know the Beastie Boys are well and truly back for 2004.

From then on, it's a highly enjoyable listen. While very much one for the B-Boys and B-Girls, the record manages to stay clear of sounding the same throughout. You also come to realize that songs such as 'Right Right Now Now', 'Triple Trouble' and 'Thats It Thats All' are as good as anything the Beasties have done in the past, and in terms of rapping, perhaps better.

Obviously if you are looking for a record to rival 'Ill Communication' in variety and talent, then this isn't what you are looking for. However, in the modern world where so called Hip Hop artists are selling the same song over and over, its refreshing to see the Beasties come out with a quality album that can rival any other Hip Hop artist out there.

As the title would suggest, New York has plenty of shout outs, and the Beasties let their political views through on several tracks as well. The outstanding 'It Takes Time To Build', while with its political content, has some brilliant beats and again excellent rhyming, and is a highlight. The track that really hits you though is 'An Open Letter to NYC', an at times emotional tribute to the city that means so much to them.

The production from the Boys themselves is second to none, and is a decent reminder to their talents in this field too. A welcome, and very strong return.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not the best....but still worth the listen!!!, 30 Jun 2004
By E. Foster - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Now the Beastie Boys are great artists really, but this isn't their best work by far. The album is creditable and has a few great tracks, such as Open Letter to NYC!! which is one the their best tracks ever.
Also on this album they join a long list on artists how have songs taking a pop at George Bush! which is always good. But if you like the Beastie Boys buy the album, it is good enough for your collection. If your debating whether to get another album from them i try i say get "Licence to Ill" which is their best work!
But really this is a good album, not great, but not poor!! there's not much else to say!!

2.0 out of 5 stars such a shame, 15 Jun 2004
The beastie's finally did it. Produced a bad album, that is.
Being a beastie fan for more than 15 years, I was more than just a little bit excited by this release. When I first heard the single ch-check it out, I was ofcourse a little disapointed, but didn't want to let this song put off me buying the record. Unfortunately, ch-check it out is one of the best songs on the album. before you click on my review saying it was unhelpful (because I didn't like this release) please let me explain why.

The beasties have evolved with every release. Licence to ill is still a fun record. Next up Paul's boutique. Still a masterpiece by todays standards, and a sign of what was to come.
Then came check your head. This album in my opinion in the best release from the beasties. They Began playing instruments, and with the help of money mark and mario caldato jr, they produced a blend of funk/rap/rock that really worked.
Next up, ill communication. this could have been called check your head 2 and was almost as good. Soem people will disagree I'm sure. Then, after a long wait came hello nasty. Although was more polished and commercial sounding, there were still 8 or so awsome songs. And like the previous records, they were musically diverse.
What the beasties have released now is an album that pretty much sounds the same from start to finish. every track uses a drum machine and contains bad samples. the production really sucked. Maybe they should get DJ hurricane back...and money mark, and mario. The beasties have always been cool and evolved with the times. With this release though, the fun has all gone. I think it is time for them to retire.

Basically, it is stagnant and un-adventurous. If you like ch-check it out though, you will probably like this. I am sure there are a new generation of beastie fans now, fans who will love this record and probably hate ill communication and check yor head.
