Manufacturer's Description

How good is your knowledge?

Celebrate two decades of Trivial Pursuit with this special edition of the world's best loved question and answer game. All questions are based on events and culture from the last 20 years. Categories include Global View, Sound & Screen, News, Written Word, Innovations, and Game Time. Game features include these 6 new question categories, special wedge holders, foil effect board and pack. Discover what you can, or perhaps cannot, remember about the last 20 years, all in one game!

Game Of The Year 2005

Trivial Pursuit 20th Anniversary Edition scooped the prestigious title of British Association of Toy Retailers Game of the Year proving that after 20 years of brain teasing the old ones are still definitely the best. The iconic game was awarded the accolade at a glittering awards ceremony earlier this year, the toy industry's equivalent of the Oscars!

The Game

The Trivial Pursuit game is a party in a box, people talking to people in a revolt against television. Since its official introduction in 1982, this phenomenally successful board game has been testing game players' wits to the limit. For only in a Trivial Pursuit game will you be asked questions as zany as, " Was Humpty Dumpty pushed?" and as difficult as "What modern day animal is related to the prehistoric merychippus?"

The History

The game was invented by two Canadian journalists in Montreal, December 15, 1979, Scott Abbott a former sports editor with the Canadian Press and Chris Haney, photo editor for the Montreal Gazette. After realizing that more help and more money were needed to begin developing their idea. Chris's older brother John, an ex-hockey player, and John's friend Ed Werner, an ex-hockey player turned lawyer, were recruited, and the team of Abbott, Haney, Haney and Werner got to work.

Having no experience with the games business, it took these four men years of hard work before the Trivial Pursuit game became a seemingly "overnight success" with the public. Having depleted almost all of their own money they convinced friends and relatives to buy shares of their company to raise additional capital. The first prototype production test market run of 1100 games were sold in Canada.

The Trivial Pursuit game was first shown in the U.S. at the American International Toy Fair in New York City in February 1982. They expected to sell thousands of copies: to their great disappointment, only a few hundred were ordered. But they would not give up - even after realizing that they were so in debt that if they sold all of the 20,000 games ordered from their second production run they would barely break even.

But there was a magic to the game, which had game stores doubling their orders and the media soliciting interviews and the rest, as they say, is history.

Spring 2004 marked the 20th anniversary of the universal board game that has sold more than 85 million copies since it was launched and through it all, the highs and lows, Abbott, Haney, Haney and Werner have remained the same four good buddies with a great idea!

And Now?

After 20 years at the top, the game is now available in 28 different countries and in 18 different languages. The current line includes Trivial Pursuit 20th Anniversary, Trivial Pursuit Genus edition, Trivial Pursuit Family edition, Trivial Pursuit for Kids, Trivial Pursuit Globetrotter and Trivial Pursuit Bite Size.

Trivial Pursuit is already spearheading a new game category with the introduction of Trivial Pursuit DVD Games. These fantastic interactive games feature lines such as Trivial Pursuit Disney DVD, Trivial Pursuit Star Wars Saga DVD, Trivial Pursuit Lord Of The Rings DVD and the new extreme game Trivial Pursuit Let Loose DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disimprovement, 12 Dec 2004
By Mr. T. Ralph - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
Trivial Pursuit has gone through many editions, but the basic aim always remained the same: moving around, answering questions, and trying to accumulate the six "wedges" from certain spaces around the board before heading back to the centre and answering one final question to win.
Unfortunately this is moving backwards from the excellent Genus editions of the past. For one thing there are less question cards, so you run the risk of starting to repeat much sooner (or have to buy top-up question packs). And although older versions of the game had the tendency to run on a bit, this version has the accelerating factor of fast-track wedge spaces. Regrettably it goes too far the other way and is now really too fast.
Finally, I'd be really clear that this definitely isn't a family game. The manufacturers recommend 15 and up, which is a definite minimum, and I'd say many 15- and 16- year olds would find quite a challenge in the game.

2.0 out of 5 stars Badly Dumbed-Down Version Of A Classic, 30 May 2006
Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
Perhaps this edition of Trivial Pursuit is an indicator of lower intelligence in the UK!

I found the questions far too easy. First play, I managed to get all six cheeses after answering only three questions wrong, and my fellow players weren't far behind.

The questions are really badly phrased, grammatically incorrect, and some are even completely wrong (such as "What do the French call 'La Manche'"??!!), there also aren't anywhere near enough questions to give the game lasting appeal.

We have even taken to modifying the questions by hand to remove most of the clues that give the answers away to all but the most moronic!

Not a patch on the old Genus Editions.

Sorry, but I was really disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Slant on an Old Game, 4 Mar 2005
Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
I was a little hesitant about going for a new slant on a new game, I mean, after all, we all have our favourite (and least favourite!) catagories in the old Trivial Pursuit don't we? After playing the game through once, I was perfectly content with the new question catagories. The questions are fun, and certainly far more up to date than in the past. Saying that, it is possible that these questions are in fact too contemporary, and that this game is likely to date pretty fast.

The new board style is very swanky, and makes a nice change. The questions, go through far too fast however and after one game we found we were breaking into the second pack out of the three provided. Trivial Pursuit really do need to think about increasing the questions supplied, or sanctioning booster packs again. This is why I have given four stars for durability, although the actual game is off course, not fragile in the least.

There was even some humour in some of the questions i.e. "what took the Americans four months in 2000 that usually takes the UK one night"?
