5.0 out of 5 stars Wild about the Moors, 25 Jan 2005
By A Customer
I first watched this film when I was 8 years old and have been a fan ever since. I read half of the book when I was 16 but recently at the age of 38 I read it all. I was very impressed and surprised by how natural the characters were despite living in a very different world from today. I can now understand the decisions that were made when adapting the book to the 1939 film. The film manages to capture the feel of the novel and Olivier's performance (apart from a rather hammy start, when he plays the older Heathcliff) brings the passion of Heathcliff to life. If you are a modern film goer perhaps you will be put off by some of the production values but stick with it. It will beguile you in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly phenomenal!, 9 Mar 2007
By J. Taylor (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As with the Binoche/Fiennes version I found this too short, but for different reasons. The Binoche/Fiennes film tried to cover the whole book, but left out considerable chunks of it. This film was too short because it only really covered half the story. But the great thing about this film is that the half of the book it did cover was fantastic!

Oberon and Olivier give brilliant performances as Cathy and Heathcliff and as a result the film is gripping and puts across the true feel of the story. The only disappointment about this film is that it does only cover one generation of Earnshaws and Lintons and at the end you are left with a feeling of dissatisfaction that there is not another hour and forty of this film!

5.0 out of 5 stars wuthering heights, 30 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This is THE definitive film version of Emily Bronte's classic novel.
This is the type of black and white movie that you just love to snuggle up to and watch on a cold, dark wintry night.
Merle Oberon is perfect as the beautiful yet stubborn Cathy and Laurence Olivier gives a masterful performance as the troubled Heathcliffe. David Niven excells as Cathy's other love in this tragic story.
It is a haunting tale of a love that will never be lived and ends in ultimate tradgedy.
I really beleive this is a film that cannot be bettered in any way and I could watch this time and time again.
Without doubt, one of my favourite films ever with fantastic performances from those mentioned and all others in supporting roles.
10/10, no question.
