What the Destruction Derby series SHOULD have been, 13 Nov 2004
What a great little game this is! Basically this is banger racing on your PS2 featuring tarmac, dirt and ice circuits! The car physics are great - barrel rolls look convincing and, handling-wise - it is similar to playing any good rally game (lots of oversteer and feathering the throttle). Although this is certainly not a "fast" racing game (like Burnout 3 for example) the fact that you have a bit more time to think means that your manouevres can be a little more precise and intentional. Stacking an opponent into a crane and hearing that driver wailing as he/she ploughs through the windscreen is akin to doing a good "takedown" on B3 i.e. it puts a big grin on your face! Driving aggressively earns you Nitro boost which is dead useful for overtaking - it has little effect when used to ram opponents. Unfortunately you only score "cash" for destroying objects, not for stylishly shunting your opponents into heavy objects. The only similarity this game has to Gran Turismo is the manner in which you start: have money, buy a banger, win races, win money, tune banger, etc. There are many sub-games too - including a DD-style destruction bowl and "figure of 8" racetracks too. The bonus "jumping" events (hurl your man/woman through the windscreen in a high jump or long jump fashion!) have to be seen to be believed!!! To me this game is a logical progression of the first Destruction Derby game on PS1 - the physics, graphics and sound have of course all been much improved and it's certainly much closer to DD1 than Reflections' own DD Arenas release. Flat Out has no online capability, but it does have multiplayer (split screen or up to 4 player sequential) modes. I think it's a cracking little game! ;-)
