This is the recital for everyone who loves Broadway musicals; this is for old timers who want to remember just how some of these great songs sounded when they were written and for younger fans who want to hear songs performed in the manner in which they were written.

Barabara Cook on Broadway is a LIVE performance from the Lincoln Center in which this superb singer pushing 70 but in magnificent voice, takes her audience through her career and remembers some of the great shows with which she was associated. She has some great stories to tell and finds plenty of great songs to sing.

What makes her so special? Firstly her taste in songs is terrific. She knows what a great song sounds like and she lets it speak for itself. Like Sinatra, for example, every word of every song is precisely placed so that meaning and context is never in doubt. A great example from this recital is her rendition of "When I marry Mr Snow" from "Carousel"; she played Carrie Pipperidge on its original tour. It is like the perfect bedside story with the introduction laying out the background and leading gently in to the main tune so that by the end you know who this woman she is praying really is.

There are other great examples as well, particularly the selection of songs from "She Loves Me" a show in which she starred. The irony of Sheldon Harnick's words in "The Library" is beautifully conveyed and yet you still feel the breathless excitement of the characters feelings.

There is wonderful accompaniment from Wally Harper who, sadly, died at the end of 2004. So this is a must for any fan of Broadway musicals.
