5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the world of Finzi, 25 Feb 2008
By Mart Music (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

Although Finzi had parents of German (Mother) and Italian (Father) origin, he was born in London and his music is typically English. Many of his compositions are sombre works, music set to the poetry of Thomas Hardy, Thomas Traherne and William Wordsworth. His childhood experiences no doubt influenced his tendency to write in such melancholy style, for his father died when he was seven and his early music teacher died during World War I. Three of his brothers also died during this period.

Nevertheless Finzi continued to study music and rubbed shoulders with some of the English greats like Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He took a dislike to the City life so moved to Wiltshire with his wife, then eventually settled in Ashmansworth in Hampshire where he spent his time composing, apple tree cultivating and amassing a huge library of books on poetry. In 1951 Finzi discovered he was suffering from Hodgkin's disease and was given tens years to live. Sadly he died much sooner, in 1956, following an illness through chickenpox.

This 2CD set gives a good example of his music, with contributions from big names like Bryn Terfel (baritone), Philip Langridge (tenor), Emma Johnson (clarinet) and conductors Richard Hickox and Sir Neville Marriner leading the London Symphony Orchestras and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. The music leans towards the vocal and choral aspect of Finzi's work, with others such as the `Clarinet Concerto' and the `Romance (Op.11)' providing examples of his orchestral compositions.

In summary, a perfect introduction to the music of Gerald Finzi
