5.0 out of 5 stars Complete songs, 30 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This is the long awaited reissue of the 4CD Argo set which won the 1985 Gramophone Solo Vocal Award, yet oddly enough the notes indicate it was taped at the Kingsway Hall from 1978-1981. At the time many of the items were premieres, though most have since been duplicated on the Swedish BIS label's own Sibelius song series, albeit sung by female voices.

The bulk of all 4 CDs are mainly Swedish songs sung by baritone Tom Krause - including the famous Op.36 "black roses" "sigh sigh rushes" "diamond on the March snow" - Soderstrom only sings 2 or 3 songs on each disc. Disc 1 has two Finnish settings, disc 2 another, disc 3 includes the 6 German songs Op.50, disc 4 another Finnish song "Kaiutar", plus a French Maeterlinck setting from Pelleas et Melisande.

Presentation is very neat. Like the Rosette series - also only available in the UK - the Gramophone Awards series includes an inner booklet in the series livery with the texts and English translations from the original LP release. Total time 232'48".

5.0 out of 5 stars Unfamiliar Sibelius, 18 Sep 2009
By J. K. Baksi "Jak Baksi" (Lewes, East Sussex,UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sibelius the symphonist is well known but Sibelius the song-writer? There are quite a few recordings around of selections from his 100+ songs and many are very good, even excellent. But none have the authority and breadth of scope of this 4 disc Complete Songs recording, a welcome reissue of the vinyl recordings dating from the late 1980s. Tom Krause and Elisabeth Soderstrom are in mellifluous voice and have an unrivalled command of the material they sing. With a few execptions, all the songs are set to Swedish texts by poets who are not well known outside Swedish speaking circles. And as regards Sibelius as a song writer, arguably he holds his own against contemporaries like Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf or Edvard Grieg. The songs cover an enormous field but most impressive and appealing of all are the wonderfully evocative songs about nordic legends and landscapes; here we are close to the symphonist. This recording is a jewel and anyone interested in unfamiliar song repertoire should snap it up.
