The law of diminishing sequels is in full effect with this follow up to, the now classic, Predator. The setting has changed to the urban jungle rather than the literal jungle and Arnie's gone, making way for Danny Glover of Lethal Weapon fame to take his place. Some may see Arnies departure as a bad thing but Glover isn't bad in this. Don't get me wrong he's not great but he's head and shoulders above the rest of the cast. This is the first problem. For the most part the acting is diabolical, with only Glover and Bill Paxton raising the level into the lofty hights of mediocraty. Some of it was so bad it made me wince.

But this kind of movie isn't really about the acting. It's about action, special effects and the Predator itself looking amazingly cool through out. It's certainly undeniable that the Predator is the real star here, and rather than simply re-hashing the original story we do learn a little more about the creature, which is always good.

The special effects are great, they still look impressive now. The creatures guns n' gadgets all look cool but also somewhat believable, and the gore effects work well. The problem with the action though is that it all feels a little slow to get started. True it opens with a gun battle but this and much of the story scenes just feel like they're delaying the scenes of the Predator despatching more macho gun-nuts. In fact the first half of this movie is almost unbearably boring because of this.

Then around the halfway point things get interesting. everything steps up a gear. The plot gets interesting and the action scenes are frequent and spectacular. Even the acting seems better though this could be because there's less of it and more set peices. If the entire film had move at the pace then it would have been another classic. as it happens this movie is one half a chore and one half a joy to watch. which in my book makes it average.

Predator 2 is not very pleasant. It doesn't reach the numbing violence of Robocop 2 but it still isn't very watchable for the faint of heart. There is also a lot of swearing. Endless F's, S.o.b's and MF's, let your children watch it and they'll come away with a whole new vocabulary. This film has earned its 18 certificate.
Not as half as good as the first one, it is exciting but it lacks suspense. It also follows the first films conventions but does have a neat little twist in the final act. I liked Danny Glover and some of the other actors but the dialogue is not up to much. Some of the action is good but it didn't define a genre like the first one did. The soundtrack is exceptional.
Exciting but no means a classic.
