Product Description

CD Description

After releasing the techno industrial, Trent Reznor-influenced EARTHLING in 1997, David Bowie came back down to Earth on HOURS. And although this album has an ambient feel and contains its share of loops and programming, it is organic overall. HOURS manages to be cutting edge and personal at the same time.
"Thursday's Child", a commercial-sounding single, uses strings and synthesizers to create an atmospheric feel. Credible solo performer Holly Palmer lends her strong voice to the track. "Something in the Air" features the restrained yet effective guitar talents of Reeves Gabrels, who has previously worked with Bowie on his solo material and in TinMachine. "Survive" is a beautiful tune that features both Mellotron and an acoustic intro and ending. "If I'm Dreaming My Life" features the formidable rhythm guitar of Chris Haskett, who has given the Rollins band its metallic crunch. Thedark rocker "The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell" is also another standout track. The subdued feel of HOURS shows a classic rocker who is at ease and introspective. Not one to rest on his laurels, David Bowie continues to put out vital material.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly lack-lustre album - lots of bonus material for die-hards!, 21 Jul 2009
By M. B. Wilson "crushtrash" (Bristol) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
After the relative ferocity of "Outside" and "Earthling" everyone is entitled to a low-key, more chilled-out affair, to balance the books, so to speak. Mr Bowie is no exception, and this album's follow-up, "Heathen" is my personal favourite of all the 'later' material. The vocal production and range of moods on taht album are amazing, and just a little bit less intense than the aforementioned two industrial tinged albums.

So where does that leave "Hours" (2cd digibook version) in the scheme of things? For me most of the vocals seem very lazy (occasionally out of tune) and unenthusiastic. Maybe the strains in the Bowie/Gabrels production relationship were manifesting in the material itself, but unfortunately I have so far found very little to like on this album. Yes ,"Thursdays Child" is quite thought-provoking, and has nice (errrm) female backing vocals to help it along, but the vocal treatment of "Something In The Air" is halfbaked, almost annoying. Only rarely do some of the songs pull themselves out of the ordinary, which is a real shame as it sits amongst 3 strong, albeit difficult at times, creative albums offering so much more potential.

This 2-cd version boasts a further 74 minutes of some interesting alternative takes, remixes and god-awful throwaway extra material (the last 4 tracks in fact). "Noone Calls" is just dreadful, slurred, out of key, lazy and essentially sounding like a poor drum-machine demo that should've stayed on the cutting room floor. Singing "Atall" repeatedly is surely not what we expect from Mr B, who is an incredible writer when on form.

The Rock Mix of "Thursdays Child" is an excellent revamp though!

I really wanted to like "Hours", and I suspect a few more listens will reveal its strengths, but it is a wee bit disappointing nonetheless. I know this review goes against the trend here, but I had hoped for more from this album.

The packaging design of all these digibooks is poor too, as mentioned by another reviewer. The discs either stick in their tight wallets, so will get scratched, or fall out of the bottom once the card weakens a bit!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album but poor packaging, 23 Nov 2008

I purchased this album along with the Earthling double disc and Outside double disc re-issues last week. This is a great album bonus disc is even better however as the title of my review suggests the packaging could be better. I have taken these discs out of the packaging twice and they are already scratched. I personally think these albums should have been re-issued in a standard 2 CD jewel case or a Digi Pack. So take note Columbia Records.
