The brainchild of brothers Joshua and Mischo McKay, Macha brings a post-rock sensibility and flair for unconventional instrumentation to the construction of smart, sophisticated indie pop. On FORGET TOMORROW, Macha leans toward an early-1980s sound that recalls New Order, the Cure, and Depeche Mode, while losing none of its penchant for quirky sounds and innovative arrangements. Washes of effects-laden guitar, gamelan, hammered dulcimer, and unusual synth and vocal textures characterise dreamy, shape-shifting instrumentals ("Paper Tigers"), surging, opiated rock ("Cmon Cmon Oblivion), electronica-tinged goth ("Smash and Grab"), and spare, angular dance grooves ("[Do the] Inevitable").
Macha is at its best when it overturns pop expectations and ventures into the unknown. Some examples include "Now Disappearing" (which resembles a conversation between Brian Eno and a small Indonesian child), "While the People Sleep" (the song of a spectral computer in a dark alley), and "No Surprise Party" (what Joy Division might sound like stranded in the Cambodian jungle).
