Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The COOLPIX 4200 is an easy-to-operate compact digital camera that boasts high-level comprehensive quality, 4.0 effective megapixel performance, and a selection of useful functions. Superior image quality begins with a newly developed 3x Zoom-Nikkor lens with a focal range of 7.8 to 23.4mm (equivalent to a 38-114mm lens in 35mm format). Featuring aspherical elements and an ED glass element, it achieves a significant reduction in aberration. It also retracts to contribute greatly to the overall slim dimensions of the body. The COOLPIX 4200 has the additional advantage of 4.0 effective megapixels, which ensures images are recorded with satisfying clarity. The elegant aluminum exterior of the COOLPIX 4200 exudes a sense of sophistication. The camera also features the same stylish grip design as the other cameras in the popular COOLPIX range, has satisfyingly compact dimensions, and a light weight - factors that combine to make the camera feel naturally comfortable in the hand. Furthermore, all controls are conveniently located within easy reach on the back of the camera body. This enables highly intuitive operation in general and provides easy access to the camera's 15 Scene modes. Each of these modes adds simplicity for the shooting of a different kind of subject, while four of them offer a Scene Assistance function to make shooting even easier still. The COOLPIX 4200 also features Advanced Red-eye Reduction, which provides automatic in-camera correction. Convenient and useful in a range of situations, it also activates automatically upon selection of Night portrait mode.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 19 Sep 2004
By R. Brown (London) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I'm a professional digital photographer working in London and I bought this camera as a present for my mother. I got it ready just to check that it was working and was very impressed with the build quality, ease of use, professional features and output of images.

The Coolpix 4200 works brilliantly as a point and shoot idiot proof camera. It is easy to hold, there is an on/off button clearly marked, the LCD screen is clear and bright and the zoom buttons fall neatly under the thumb.

Investigating further I found a number of 'assist' modes that allow the user to take advantage of certain professional tricks to produce pictures in difficult circumstances such as backlit portraits, building panoramic shots, and so on. Very much like having a photographic guru inside the camera to help you out.

The camera also has a comprehensive range of professional features that I have found to be lacking in other digital compact cameras such as ISO settings, multi area focus, etc.

To summarise the Coolpix 4200 is an excellent camera that is easy to use for the beginner, has a range of technical features for the hobbyist, and is sufficiently powerful to use as a spare for the professional or semi-professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compact camera!, 8 Oct 2004
This is my first digital camera after 15 years+ of semi-pro photography. Just bought this camera 2 weeks ago as a compact "go everywhere" machine to take with me on all my business trips, and I have been tremendously impressed. On the outside, great build quality (metallic body shell, as opposed to the Coolpix 3200 which is in plastic), very compact but ergonomically sound (handgrip is a plus compared to competitors like Canon Ixus and similar). Picture quality is excellent (thanks to Nikkor ED lens) in daylight as well as interiors and the flash is suprisingly powerful, may be too much which makes the picture too white, but may be I need to get more familiar with the camera controls. The menus and options are quite intuitive. I started to use the camera without reading the manual. The short video clip recording facility gives a low res clip but sufficiently good to be acceptable to watch. Shame that it's in .MOV (Quicktime)format instead of AVI or MPEG. It only provides 32Mb of on-board memory but It uses SD Cards, which I believe will become the predominant storage medium for digital cameras. I don't have any term of comparison for battery life but I think that It is as good or better than similar products in the market. Only downside is that you cannot charge the battery from within the camera. You have to remove the battery altogether to plug it into the charger. Overall, big thumbs up for this camera, well worth the 230 £ I paid for it.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Nikon Coolpix 4200, 23 Sep 2004
The casing for the 4200 is of an all-metal design and so is much harder to dent/scratch etc and will certainly be more durable than some other more models made mostly of plastic. If you don't have much experience of digital compacts or are going upmarket then you will be pleased with the size of the coolpix 4200. The Coopix 4200 measures 8.5x3.5x5.5cm (length x width x height) and so fits very nicely into all size of pockets.
The buttons are well laid out but there may be some who find them too small. The covers to USB/AV out, battery and memory card are not flimsy like on some other brands and are not at risk of falling off after owning it for a while. The CCD TFT screen used for viewing menus, taking pics etc is crystal clear and is the usual screen size of 1/1.8 although there are cameras coming out with considerably larger screens.
The picture quality on this model is excellent and produced consistently great pictures with no sign of any pixelation (pictures looking dotty) proving that the 4MP image resolution was more than adequate. The lens has 3x optical and 4x digital zoom. Often using the digital zoom in digital cameras means a reduction in quality but I could not notice it on this model.
The software came with very easy to set up instructions and transferring pictures to a computer is easy. The 4200 is pictbridge enabled so can be connected straight to compliant printers.
The camera comes with 14.5MB internal memory which on max resolution will store 5 pictures so it is vital to buy a Secure Digital (SD) card and I would recommend no less than 128MB which will cost roughly £20 to £25.
There are many different modes on the camera to help in many different environments such as landscape and indoor party. In the auto setting all vital settings are controlled by the camera and no input is needed other than to take the picture.
This camera comes with a charger which is vital to all digital cameras as they consume a lot of batteries and also supplied is a Nikon rechargeable battery. I have found that the battery life on the supplied battery to be absolutely superb. Start up time and write speed to the SD card I found also to be superb. This camera is great value and a very good all round performer.
