I see the German CPO label as a sort of upmarket Naxos (not that I'm denigrating Naxos, by the way), with higher prices being reflected in the superior packaging and notes. CPO has tended to release records of music by less well-known composers and I'm very glad they do.

This double CD contains the last four symphonies from the pen of Joachim Raff. Raff was actually a Swiss but spent much of his adult life in Germany. He was born in 1822 and died in 1882, worn out from hard work. During his lifetime, his symphonies were very popular until his sun was eclipsed by Brahms. Some say that his best symphonies were 3 and 5, but this late quartet are very good, too.

Raff spent quite some time in the Liszt "school" in Weimar and is credited with orchestrating some of Liszt's earlier tone poems. All was fine until Raff wrote a book about Wagner with a few critical observations; a general falling out ensued. He then spent a long time teaching until his relatively early death.

These symphonies reflect the four seasons of the year and will be liked by those who like Brahms, even with their Wagnerian touches. The set has high production standards and was the last recording by the Philharmonia Hungarica, set down in the early 1990s. This is all melodic stuff and there is nothing here to frighten the horses.

Raff is worth investigating and this modestly priced set is as good a place as any to start with. There are lots of other CDs available, a few on Naxos/Marco Polo, and several on the very expensive Swiss-owned Tudor label.
