Amazon.co.uk Review

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is a wild and clever animated prequel, slightly more than a half-hour, to the live-action hit film about 19th-century monster hunter Dr. Gabriel Van Helsing. Set just before actor Hugh Jackman's dark hero heads off for battle with Count Dracula in Eastern Europe, The London Assignment finds Van Helsing attempting to stop Dr. Jekyll, and the latter's terrifying associate, Mr. Hyde, from their bizarre and bloody quest to turn septuagenarian Queen Victoria into a lovelorn girl again. While the widescreen artistry is often brutal, it is also breathtaking, especially in a fantastic chase sequence involving train cars. Besides Jackman, several actors from the feature lend voices to their cartoon counterparts, including Robbie Coltrane (as Hyde), Alun Armstrong (as Cardinal Jinette), and David Wenhman (as sidekick Carl). --Tom Keogh

Synopsis

Van Helsing - The London Assignment presents an animated prequel to the live action feature film Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman. In this animated short, the Knights of the Holy Order send Van Helsing (voiced again by Jackman) into London to search for the demonic Mr. Hyde, who has tormented the city with a violent crime spree.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent prologue to an excellent film!, 18 May 2004
Van Helsing (the London Assignment) is an excellent cartoon! From the beautifully drawn backgrounds to the wonderful talents of the voice actors. (Hugh Jackman actually doing the voice of Van Helsing, as he did in the live action film, making it much more authentic when you watch) No detail has been overlooked to create this brilliant prologue to the new film.

The cartoon blends in perfectly as a prologue and really does gives the real atmospheric feeling of 19th Century London. Some parts will also leaving you in stitches at Van Helsing's witty remarks and when he gets his 'reward'. It definatly leaves you wanting to find out what happens after the end credits role.

As mentioned before, this is the animated prologue to the new Van Helsing film, which introduces us to the world of the famous vampire hunter. We are introduced to various characters that will appear in the film, and learn just what exactly Van Helsing does, as well as get an idea of how he moves, talks, acts and what weapons he enjoys using. We are introduced to the bumbling Carl, who provides the vampire hunter with all his gadgets as well as providing comic relief.

Lastly we also meet Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego, Mr. Hyde, and discover what sinister scheme they have in store for the Queen of England, and what it has to do with the murder of young women...

All in all, a very good film, though my only complaint is that it finishes just a little too soon (It is only 32 minutes long.) However it makes up with this by including the most thorough version of the making of Van Helsing, much better than the ones I have seen on TV. Plus we get a trailer for the game, as well as a making for the game too.

If you've already seen the film, and loved it, then you must definitely buy this! You'll love it as just as much!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lie back, Close your eyes and think of England., 13 Oct 2004
By "marcusmuck" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
It's an animation with 3D effects (the train sequence is particularly fine)and quite violent in places.

It's very much like the animated 'Batman' cartoon: stylised, dark and moody.

The story takes facets from all over: the Jack the Ripper murders and the not-too-remote 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' must take a bow surely?

Hugh Jackman and Robbie Coltrane are good as the voices for the two principal characters (I've never heard Robbie as evil-sounding).

It's 32 minutes long which is disappointing as it's the feature on a DVD package and seems like one in a large continuing series although this is the first and only as yet.

As a patriotic Brit I also feel the subject matter a bit 'risque': I mean isn't Victoria still a National Institution in this Green and Pleasant Land?

anyway.

The Extras are great so it's worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillaint!, 20 May 2004
Well I had seen the film, and wanted more. So I just had to get this, and it was really good. I must admit though it just wouldn't have been the same with a different actors voice. I think it may have been better to see it before the film but it didn't come out until after it came to the cinema. But I'm sure I shall watch it lots more before the films DVD comes out. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
