5.0 out of 5 stars Descriptive American Orchestral Suites Beautifully Done, 18 Aug 2004
By J Scott Morrison (Middlebury VT, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
To Americans of a certain age, the name Ferde Grofé conjures up images of the Grand Canyon, because for many years one heard in all kinds of venues music from, or arranged from, his very popular Grand Canyon Suite, which is included on this SACD disc from Naxos. It also includes the Mississippi Suite and the Niagara Falls Suite. It seems as if Grofé was dedicated to writing music to describe all manner of American landscapes, activities, holidays, etc. This CD is one of several that have been issued by Naxos that give us a pretty good taste of his up-front, middle-American, easy-to-understand music. He was an expert at painting musical pictures. Probably most famous of such passages in his music is the hee-haw of the burro at the beginning of 'On the Trail' from 'Grand Canyon,' followed by a whiny violin cadenza that signifies the burro's reluctance to begin the descent down into the canyon. And then comes the familiar clip-clop of the burro's hooves. Also extraordinarily pictorial is the final section of the suite, 'Cloudburst,' which does indeed picture a desert storm.

The Mississippi Suite is just as descriptive, and even more so is the Niagara Suite which begins with a eerily accurate percussion imitation of the roar of the water going over the Falls.

These perfomances have all been released before on a plain-vanilla CD (and I urge you to read the reviews for that release to gain more information) and here it is in the more vivid surround-sound SACD format. I will admit I have not heard it in surround sound, because I haven't converted to the format, but from previous listens of other Naxos SACD on such equipment, I can confidently predict that the sound would be awesome.

Strong performances by the Bournemouth Symphony under William T. Stromberg, a conductor who has made a career of conducting film scores. Grofé music is not film music, but it could easily be taken for such.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accessible, enjoyable classics, 5 Mar 2005
The three suites on this disc contain some wonderfully descriptive music. This isn't highbrow listening, but is a collection of easy to listen to short pieces that often sound like film music. The disc opens with Mississippi Suite which contains four pleasant, contrasting movements. Not the best music ever (imho) but certainly listenable (if a little cheesy in parts).

The Grand Canyon Suites depiction of the desert is beautiful, moving from 'Sunrise', through travelling with a burro 'On The Trail' till 'Sunset'. Then there is 'Cloudburst' which is scarily convincing, reprises the theme from 'On The Trail' then takes you through a storm from its approach to its withdrawal; certainly the high point of the whole disc.

The 'Power of Niagara' at the end of the Niagara Falls Suite is intense. Reminds me of some of the bits from the original Metropolis score that are used in the machine rooms.

Multichannel Sonics: 5.1 with the centre channel used to good effect at a measured volume level. Nice amount of ambience from the surrounds. Fairly heavy LFE use but not overpowering. The soundscape is a little disappointing with a lot of the instruments coming from the left or right extremes. There is depth to the field behind the centre channel but it is a little indistinct. The violins and the brass sound a little harsh too.

The performance is lively across the whole recording which makes the disc enjoyable even considering the sonic imperfections. Despite my being a bit critical in this review, the disc finds it way into my player suprisingly often! Naxos also recorded another concert of some other Grofe suites in the same venue with the same orchestra two years later. The recorded was in surround at 24bit and may see an SACD release in the future (currently only on RBCD).
