1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this one at all costs! Defective!, 3 Nov 2004
I cannot believe for one second, that soulblade didn't even check this product before releasing it! They are the worst distrabutor I have ever known!

First, there are a number of problems!

1) The 2:35:1 print has been squashed in to 1:78:1 resulting in heavy distortion.
2) Subtitles are nearly dubtitles which mean they are subtitling the English dub.
3) The Interview with Ng See Yuen is out of sync!
4) The entire disc has the aspect ratio problems - EVERYTHING is distorted except for the Green Snake Trailer.
5) Extras are not worth much, commentary is crap and VERY little input goes into the film itself, biographies are so-so, interviews can be found on other discs, restoration feature is interesting however, don't watch this before the film or it will ruin the ending, trailers are ok.

6) Ultamatly, a disc which should be ignored! Mei Ah version has: original theatrical trailer in Cantonese/Mandarin and the film although slightly off-tint and a little bit more dirtier, it still has the 2:35:1 ratio correct.

Pass this one please!

2.0 out of 5 stars New DVD Below average/Poor, 10 Sep 2004
I have just bought the new DVD 'Dance of the Drunk Mantis:Drunken Master 2' from a new label called soul blade...
To be honest here and let's say brutal the DVD was below average/fairly poor compared with Hong Kong Legends.
Guys, if you are going to release a debut DVD giving us lost & entertaining kung fu films make sure you DON'T DON'T do any of the following;

1) Release interviews that have appeared(in better visual & audio quality) in other DVDs
2) Release rare footage from Drunken Master that has appeared in other DVDs
3) Ask two 'experts' to record a commentary track that tells us nothing we don't already know and then have the sound quality from one 'expert' to be nearly inaudiable
4) Give us a feature that gives us background to each actor/director that we can't read unless we sit an Inch from the television
5) Give us a restoration feature that will spoil the whole film without warning us first in LARGE text before the feature

What's left? A couple of trailers, great film, good audio and good subtitles which is to be expected anyway!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Kung Fu, 14 Aug 2004
By M. J. Maley "mikeitup" (here) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an overlooked kf classic and was the only OFFICIAL sequel to Jackie Chan's 1978 hit Drunken Master until he returned in 1994 with Drunken Master 2. (Even though the '94 version had no input from Yuen Woo Ping or Ng See Yuen)
This film reunites most of the cast of the first movie with the exception of Mr Chan who is replaced this time round by Yuen Shin Yi. It follows the quest of evil Rubberlegs (Hwang Jang Lee)and his student (Yuen Kwai aka Corey Yuen) to track down and kill Sam the Seed. I won't go into the plot in great detail but I will say that this is just as good as the original DM. Shin Yi is not as charismatic as JC but he has all the acrobatic skils and martial arts abilites. This movie was hoped to have launched his career the same as DM did for Jackie but it did not and he played mainly villains or appeared in supporting roles for most of his career.
The movie contains the arduous training sequences that are the hallmarks of classic martial arts movies and the action choreography from the Yuen Clan (Yuen Woo Ping, Yuen Cheung Yan, Yuen Shin Yi, Yeun Yat Chor and Brandy Yuen) are as outstanding as ever. The ingenuity of the fight scenes must be applauded. These guys are brilliant!!
I could go on all day about the fight scenes but you will have to buy the disc.
There are quite a few special features on this disc.
It has Mandarin and Cantonese Audio (5.1), English dub and Interviews with Ng See Yuen and Yuen Woo Ping. These interviews have already appeared on HKL discs. On the Ng See Yuen interview the sound is out of synch with the pictures but as I have already seen it it does not matter to me that much. There is a featurette on the restoration done to the movie which shows what a good job the guys did to clean the print up. Also included is an audio commentary from Rick Baker and Toby Russell (authors of The Essential Guide to Hong Kong Movies) who know their stuff and while it does not flow as well as the Bey Logan commentaries on HKL dvds it still contains very useful information about the movie and it's stars.
I hope they are going to record commentaries for the movies due out on Soulblade later this year.
A lesser known kung fu flick it may be but it is quality stuff from masters of the genre.. Buy it now, I'm glad I did.
