DVD Description
A romantic comedy set in the vibrant and colourful world of North London, full of humour and warmth, Suzie Gold conveys the universal struggle of finding one's true identity amidst social conventions and family tradition.

As Suzie's sister prepares to get married, it seems only natural that Suzie's thoughts should turn to the state of her own love-life. While her doting but dysfunctional family desperately want her to be happy - preferably by finding a good Jewish boy to settle down with - Suzie meets Darren, a boy from work, and they start a heady romance. But the relationship sours when Suzie finds herself unable to bring him home, worried that he won't match up to her family's exacting (double) standards.

Heartborken, Suzie begins to question her role in life, and develops a need to break away from the family and traditions that have always defined her. But she is soon approached by perfect son-in-law material Anthony Silver (nice Jew, nice job, nice car) who quickly assumes, as does her family, that she will marry him. While the pressure builds for her to tie the knot, Suzie is forced to decide what she really wants out of life - and whether to follow the path laid out for her, or to make her own way through uncharted territory.

Synopsis
The old-fashioned tale of the younger generation trying to rebel against their culture and fall in love with an outsider. When Jewish Suzie's sister (Ariana Fraval) is set to marry a nice Jewish boy, everyone's very happy. But Suzie (Summer Phoenix) has met Darren (Leo Gregory), who's not Jewish, and they begin a secret romance but he's not happy that her family would disapprove and gives her an ultimatum. Alternatively, Anthony (Iddo Goldberg), who is ideal Jewish husband material, persists in asking her out. Dilemma dilemma. This comedy is directed and co-written by DA ALI G SHOW's Richard Cantor and features a cameo role from S CLUB 7's Rachel Stevens.

OK, so the press have torn into this film because My Big Fat Greek wedding got the ethnic stereotyping in first and Bridget Jones was a more likeable heroine. But this movie isn't as bad as the Fleet Street sourpusses would have you know and if you can ignore the dodgy characterisation, Suzie Gold presents a fairly sincere - and occasionally touching - view of the whole assimilation issue in 21st Century Britain.

Summer Phoenix holds it together despite being neither English or Jewish. She has an on screen charm and her accent holds up pretty well, even if she is let down by the fairly ordinary plotline and script. Most of the others in the cast are competent but have little to work. Iddo Goldberg, as Anthony Silver, grows into his role superbly and stands out as an engaging little creep.

The direction is generally good and the film moves at a steady pace although some of the scenes involving Suzie and her grandmother miss a trick, with some rather limp dialogue.

An entertaining if hardly life changing experience, Suzie Gold is a decent film and compares favourably with most of the British romcoms released each year. Perhaps the critics could have been a little more charitable.

I watched this movie and had a great time - it's that simple. It's easy to miss films like Suzie Gold because critics pick them apart, but this movie a definite must-see. Suzie Gold is about a Jewish family but the themes are universal. There are some great lines in there too. It's the perfect date movie and Summer Phoenix does a flawless North London accent. It's really well directed too.

Now if they dumped the name "Suzie Gold" and had opted for My Quite Slim Jewish Wedding and we were 6 months before "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was even conceived...you'd be interested wouldn't you? Let's face it, we all watched My Big Fat because it sounded intriguing. "Suzie Gold" doesn't really do it as a title and it would be oh so easy to simply ignore this release and move on. Well don't. Don't even think about it! If you enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding (or like me you hoped to enjoy it based on what it purported to offer) then this film is for you. My Big Fat claimed to be the funniest film of the year, do you remember laughing much? However, Suzie Gold is everything that My Big Fat was, but with the more abundant material that a Jewish theme offers and a whole lot more laughs. Take a chance on this one and you'll not be disappointed.
