Amazon.co.uk Review

For many fans, the Superman revisionist series Smallville truly hit its stride in its second series, when it shifted focus from traditional comic book conflicts to one of self-discovery for its hero, a teenage Clark Kent (Tom Welling). Fans and first-timers can judge for themselves with this six-disc set, which collects all 23 episodes and a decent selection of supplemental features. Whereas series 1 focused on Clark using his powers to combat a host of menaces as in the WB's other big fantasy hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, series 2 delved into Clark's past and the extent of his super powers, most notably in the back-to-back "Heat", in which he discovers his heat vision, and "Red," in which red kryptonite uncorks Clark's less-than-upstanding side. Other plot developments that pull the series in interesting directions include the arrival of Dr Helen Bryce (Emanuelle Vaugier), who becomes involved with Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), but the series' most significant moment comes during episode 17, "Rosetta", in which Clark learns of his Kryptonian origins courtesy of a scientist, who, in an effective bit of casting, is played by Superman star Christopher Reeve.

The complexity of the writing and the issues dealt with in series 2 marked Smallville as a series with depth and drama worthy of its considerable fan following as well as a second boxed set; fittingly, the supplements in this set are more expansive than on the first one. Producers Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Greg Beeman and cast members Welling, Rosenbaum and Kristen Kreuk weigh in on commentary tracks for two episodes ("Red" and "Rosetta"), while a trio of short featurettes explore Christopher Reeves' appearance in "Rosetta", the show's visual effects and the amusing "Wall of Weird" web page maintained by Chloe (Allison Mack). The extras are rounded out by a handful of deleted scenes and a gag reel. --Paul Gaita

5.0 out of 5 stars Smallville Season 2, 26 Feb 2005
By A Customer
WOW! Aside from Charmed this is one of the best shows on TV. At the start of this season we find out what happens after the cliffhanger ending of season one where Lana was picked up inside her truck by a twister. But I'm not gonna tell you any more you'll have to buy this dvd to find out. In this season Clark discovers he has the ability of heat vision. We also see a guest appearance from the late Christopher Reeve (the original superman from the movies) who plays Dr Swan a man who is determined to find out where Clark has come from and why he is on Earth. This is an excellent season packed to the brim with action and special effects. A must have even for those who are not fans of superman. I would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smallville- Series 2. Hit Or Miss?, 21 Jul 2004
After the fairly staid formulaic structure of the first season of Smallville (I rate it at 4*), it was nice to see that the show's creators finally threw off some of the creative shackles. This was great news as I am a huge fan of the show. The burning question for me was whether this new lease of life was going to be enough. And, I can happily say, yes it is. This second chronicle in the legend of Superman is absolutely bloody fantastic.
It's all here. Heat vision? Check. Ever growing tension in the Clark/ Lana/ Chloe love triangle? Check. Red Kryptonite? Check. Throwing these obvious pleasures aside, the real show stopper is the increasing paranoia of Lex Luthor (Mike Rosenbaum). Episode after episode, his fascination with Clark grows and grows. Clark (Tom Welling) is blissfully ignorant of this, thinking Lex and himself are going to be friends forever. Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) is right to suspect Lex's motives as the two-faced Luthor is making investigative enquiries behind his back. This is a great extension of the plot from the first season.
And yes, it finally happens. After spending the first season watching Lana behind an emotional 'door', Clark is finally getting close to the girl of his dreams. But not without a few obstacles. Lana has to deal with the death of her Marine boyfriend, Whitney Fordman, as well as her own frustration at Clark's complete inability at keeping a promise. This shows great promise for a psychological hero complex to emerge. Mmmmm, delicious.
That brings us to Clark's latest addition to his superhero arseanl, heat vision. This comes about accidentally, with un-intentionally funny consequences. Clark setting fire to a school projector screen while checking out a really HOT (sorry about the pun there) teacher (Krista Allen) who actually turns out to be Lex's fiancee, Disaree. Masterful. It turns out that the heat vision is, initially, triggered by thinking of sex. So you then get Clark with Lana, alone, in the Talon, together and a whole lot of torched decor. Mmmmm, flamey.
Anyway, I think I should let you buy the set and find out for yourselves.
I do have one grumble though. Where's the episode guide that Season 1 came with? Other than that, a superb series is put together with a superb dvd boxset. The special features are definitley worth a look, with a fantastic documentary on the SFX of Smallville. MMMMMMMMMM. Yeah, I cannot wait for the Season 3 set. Bring it on!!!!!! Peace out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Plot Thickens, 4 May 2004
By deadteddy (Bridgend) - See all my reviews

Season 1 of Smallville was cracking but this takes where 1 left off and runs with it. Season 2 feels grittier than the first with a slightly darker feel to it. Thanks to the myth behind Superman we have some of the most interesting and surprising episodes that put a completely different spin on the Superman universe. We also continue to see Clark and Lanas relationship struggle on its winding path. If you enjoyed the first series then you'll love this. The season finale is a corker and will have you on the edge of your seat. Sadly you'll have to wait for season 3 to find out.
