Synopsis
An all-star remake of a horror classic. A grumpy old man declares that his last will and testament not be read until twenty years after of his death, in the vain hope of losing a few of his "unsuitable" heirs along the way. At the long awaited reading, in order to collect their inheritance, the very nervous family must spend one night in an old, dark scary house, with a psychotic criminal on the loose.

This is the glossy 1979 adaptation of John Willard's much filmed play. Whilst the 1939 version was a vechile for Bob Hope's skills as a comedy actor, this is a much more straight laced version, minus the humour. On the plus side, the cast assembled here is amazing, and its a reasonable enough effort at a creepy old haunted house mystery. Its just all a bit listless and lacking in imagination. To sum up, very stylish but with little substance

in contrast with the previous reviewer i really like this remake. I found it creepier, and actually MORE funny than the Bob Hope version. There's a fantastically catty, vindictive performance by Honor Blackman; Olivia Hussey looks fantastic and i mean what can i say about dreamboat Peter McEnery, (except when he has his mask on that is!) Oh but I'll tell you who steals the show: Wendy Hiller (who else?). Will you permit me a wee bit of pretension?, this is one of the best films I've seen about 'film' itself. The scene around the dinner table with the dinner going on, orchestrated by the 'eccentric' Cyrus. It is a film about control, about money and greed, about 'directing', manipulating, sanity/insanity etc. etc.

Not a bad film at all, worth a view definitely.
