This DVD mystified me . Contrary to the title ,the DVD has no real relevance , so far as I saw , to the 60th Anniversary of D - Day. Indeed the copyright is dated 1994 , so presumably this is a reissue , suitably packaged to pick up on the media publicity for the 60th Anniversary. Also , contrary to the title , the DVD does not concentrate on D - Day , but has a much looser and wider focus on World War 2 action up to the crossing of the Rhine .The ' booklet ' which accompanies the DVD is wholly unmemorable . The 'added scenes' element is a rag - bag of WW2 film , such as the raid on St Nazaire - any connection to D - Day being less than obvious , so I guess this was added on to make an effort at justifying the rather expensive cover price , as was the 'special ' packaging.

All in all , disappointing , overpriced , and a bit of a rip-off, in my view.

Although the title gives the impression that this is a new production especially produced for the 60th anniversary of D-Day, it was actually produced 10 years before that date. It is in fact one of the episodes of the series as far as i can recall of "A Century of Warfare."

Secondly, as the episode itself was called Normandy to the Rhine, it indicates that the episode did not focus exclusively on D-Day but the whole period from D-Day to reaching the Rhine. Hence this DVD covers the complete fall of France, the Arnhem fiasco & the Battle of the Bulge.

In trying to cover a too broad a topic, the actual time spent on D-Day can amount to no more than 20 minutes at most.

In keeping with the format of its progenitor, this DVD has no commentary by combatants or dramatis personae.

On a positive note most of the footage used on this production had never been used or seen, certainly by this reviewer.

What is unique about this edition is the lavish packaging & enclosed booklet. In addition, graphics of various battles unrelated to D-Day are included.

For those people wanting a more comprehensive & insightful documentary about the subject matter, the eponymous DVD by the BBC entitled D-Day would be more appealing.
