4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent double live album from band on top form, 5 Jul 2004
By Dr. D. B. Sillars - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Strange behaviour indeed for a band to release a 2 CD live album after only 3 studio albums, but this album is justified in that it offers far superior interpretations of songs from those albums plus two brand new tracks added for good measure. Karnataka, along with Mostly Autumn and Iona beautifully mix celtic influenced music with a progressive rock edge. Their last studio album "Delicate Flame of Desire" earned them much praise and increased their fan base quite considerably. This live document is a neat way of taking stock of what has gone before and showcasing how much the band has progressed over the last few years.

With the addition of vocalist and flautist Anne-Marie Helder augmenting the superlative vocals of Rachel Jones the band has now settled into its current impressive line-up. Though the material on the previous studio albums is very strong I have always felt that it has been let down by the production. Especially on "Delicate Flame of Desire" it is very difficult to distinguish individual instruments clearly. This may be more to do with the arrangements, but the whole sound has a murky, claustrophobic feel to it. No such problem on this live album, where the sound is vibrant and energetic as are the performances. The band sound on top form, with older material in particular given a fresh, electrifying slant which will please those already familiar with the studio albums. It's good to hear a band willing to progress their songs live, rather than just retread the studio versions.

This album acts as an excellent overview of where the band is at present and a good companion to the studio albums for existing fans, especially for the new songs. It is a fine testament to a band who are quickly becoming one of the best of its type. It firmly puts a mark under where the band has progressed to and promises great things for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars June 2004, 26 Sep 2005
By A Customer
June 2004 will see the release of the latest album from successful Welsh rock band Karnataka. The album is a double live album. This live album will see the band consolidating the success they have achieved over the last six years since the release of the self-titled debut album in 1998.
Karnataka formed in the late nineties and very quickly built up a strong and staunch following. The band has released a number of well-received albums including Karnataka, The Storm and more recently Delicate Flame Of Desire. The band has a unique line up which features two female vocalists, Rachel Jones and Anne-Marie Helder, both of whom have complimenting but contrasting styles.
The remainder of the band are made up of bassist Ian Jones, drummer Gavin John Griffiths, guitarist Paul Davies and keyboard player Jonathan Edwards. In addition to the staunch live following the band have built up both in the UK and abroad the band have also managed to find friends in high places in the shape of Bob Harris who regularly plays their music on his national radio programme and has been quoted as saying that Karnataka are "Wonderful Stuff..."
It is through extensive gigging and attention to the original grass roots following that has paid dividends for Karnataka and whilst the studio albums are a very important and of course necessary part of the Karnataka story it is the live arena where the band really connects with an audience.
This double live album was recorded in late 2003 at two specific concerts at the Limelight in Crewe and the borderline in London. The album contains over two hours of music spread across the two discs and includes material from the bands previous studio albums and also includes two new and previously unreleased songs. The live album comes at the end of a hectic year for the band which saw them touring heavily in their own right and with others such as Status Quo and also saw the band reap their just rewards at the annual Classic Rock Society awards where they picked up awards for the best album of the year (Delicate Flame Of Desire), Best Band and best female Vocalist (Rachel Jones).
2004 will see no let up in the bands schedule and finds them following up the release of Strange Behaviour with an extensive tour of the UK, which also includes an appearance at the legendary Isle of Wight festival alongside the likes of David Bowie and The Who.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange?.. Unbelievable!, 11 May 2008
By Michael Ashton "An OLD fan" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was to be the Swansong of a band that had really only just fledged. The line-up split and from the ashes we have Panic Room, and a new, international version of Karnataka. Confused? I was. But take heart. Barrie Sillars is right. This live album is probably their best, and as a live recording is as near perfect as needs be.
If you like your rock melodic and powerful without being metallic and you like the sound of harmonious female voices, this band and this CD will please enormously. Why Karnataka did not go on to rule the musical universe is a crying shame. I have never heard a better voice in rock than Rachel's, and combined with Anne-Marie's - heaven. Go out and do your ears and your soul a favour... buy this.
