After many years and interminable scrappy compilations from various Dirty Harry films under different guises and, God help us all, cover version albums, here we finally have the real deal. All the original music from the original (and vastly superior) film.

To my surprise, Lalo Schifrin composed the lot - The main themes obviously, the music wafting out of cars (particularly during the iconic robbery sequence), the music emanating from strip clubs heard fleetingly when Harry & Chico patrol the red light district. Even the chiming bells at the very beginning of the film, where the list of police officers killed in the line of duty scrolls up, are there. I suppose some choice dialogue could have been intercut with the tracks but perhaps that would have been gilding the lily and you can always do that yourself I suppose.

Needless to say, this is indispensible listening. The definitive Schifrin item mysteriously withheld until now. In terms of big movie soundtracks not available on CD this probably now leaves The Shining (also Warners) and, um, Wrath of Khan, the latter of which is more of a guilty pleasure. Come to think of it though, aren't all Soundtrack albums a guilty pleasure to some extent?

This is a cool collection of songs from the Dirty Harry films. There's only one dialoge in the album and it's that classic "do u feel lucky??" by Eastwood. Album opens with that and right after the dialogue we get right to the point. Warm rhodes, funky bass and drums with some dissonance stringchord we go to the "Main Theme" which is Lalo Schifrin in his best. The "Scorpios theme" is another killer with its human vocal line and groovy beat. There are also some disturbing stringwork and "suspense" music which does not hold up so well without its original concept. And when we get to the 80's stuff it's just seems that Schifrin has lost his way at some point. Plastic synthsounds and terrible sounding drum machines is more near to "Beverly Hills Cop" sound that Schifrin's great scores before.

All in all, there are enough some good stuff to make this worth to buy and for those familiar with Schifrin's other 70's funky scores will definitely have something in this compilation.
