3.0 out of 5 stars da da da da da da dada da..., 18 Jan 2005
By MR DAVID C POMEROY (Plumstead, London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Rocky Legends. Go on, admit it, you can already hear the fantastic soundtrack! But its the game your interested in so is it any good? Well. yes and no. The 1st game didn't make the effort to give you any fun with the other major fighters (Creed, Lang and Drago) but this one does. Strangely though, you don't get to play as Gunn. It also has some lovely cut scenes before and after the 1st fight with all 4 major characters. This isn't repeated per fight, so a great opportunity to give us some story is sadly not taken up (even the cut scenes from the 1st game are gone). The training games are tweaked, and each fighter does have at least one unique training session but a few more would have been nice. There are more fighters and more backgrounds to fight in plus an extra mode (survival) but at the end of it all, Venom just didn't do enough to make this a better game. Give us a story to follow and an upgraded fight engine and you'd be hard pressed to critise this game, but as it is, after about 20 mins of playing, you'll be hard pressed to notice any difference between this and the prequel.
For Rocky fans only.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Renting Only, 16 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I haven't played the previous game in this series so i can't comment on the improvements or lack thereof. If you're a ROCKY fan then you'll be drawn in straight away with the classic opening and stirring music from the films (notably 1, 2 and 4)

There isnt much of a story interjected into the career mode where you take on about 24 fighters on your way to the top. What i did like was the boxing physics engine. You can see how hard and what kind of damage your opponent takes from your punches. Its fairly easy to learn a few combos and the atmosphere generated is quite good. Whenever you or your opponent get down to about 15% health the old Rocky II WAR music starts up...which can inspire you to make a comeback or finish off the opponent! A very nice touch i thought (brings back the memories) Another thing which happens when your health is low is that you can go into fury mode where your punches are harder hitting but you cant block.
Ok, so the graphics are well realised, the music and sound effects are excellent and the fight engine does the job so whats the bad points?

On career mode you cant draw or lose more than twice before its game over. This highly detracts from the realism of the game and i felt some other penalty like str, stamina, speed and movement penalties would be a better option than just simply having a GAME OVER message after you lose or draw just 2 fights(out of a possible 25 fighters) After each fight its true you sometimes do lose a couple of points to varying attributes, however you should lose an amount appropriate to the level of toughness of the fight (e.g. a 15 round gruelling punchfest should hit your stamina hard!) On a positive note at least the attributes of the boxer you can improve (strength, speed, stamina, determination and movement) are not just for show and seem to make a noticeable difference in the game. Lots of extras to open up in this game as well inc trailers for all the rocky films, character bios, stadiums, training modes etc.

I highly recommend this for title for renting. I don't feel it has the true longevity for a purchase. You can take each of the four boxers to the top true but once you have taken Rocky to the top it feels a bit repetitive doing the same with the others.
