Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The latest in a series of adventure games that has divided gamers pretty much from the beginning, Myst IV is undoubtedly a persuasive evolution for the franchise. However, whether you like it or not is going to very much come down to what side of the fence you fall.

Its detractors will point, with some degree of justification, to the ponderous pace, the old-style gameplay approach and the game's tendency to cover its cracks with outstanding presentation. Yet those who champion it would argue this misses the point. Myst has always been a cerebral experience that rewards patience, thought and a generous investment of time.

The actual truth isn't quite as clear cut as either camp would have it. There's plenty to admire in Myst IV, and it's a game with a thought-out, well compiled story at the heart of it. It's very easy to get to grips with, and has few qualms about challenging and pushing the gamer to unravel the many puzzles they're presented with. It deliberately avoids all-out action, and instead encourages you to explore, interact and take in the impressive multimedia diversions.

But does it work as a game? Actually, yes it does. The adventure itself is pleasantly engrossing, and it'll happily show off the capabilities of the kind of hefty PC that's needed to run it. It won't win much favour with action gamers, nor those who have failed to warm to the Myst experience in the past. But then perhaps it's not supposed to. Instead, those who like a gentler, more laid-back but no-less an addictive gaming experience are advised to give it a try.--Simon Brew

Manufacturer’s Description

Within the visually awe-inspiring world of Myst, a gripping family drama will slowly unfold. In Myst IV Revelation, players finally learn the fate of Sirrus and Achenar, two villains first introduced in the original Myst. The brothers have remained trapped in separate prison worlds, abandoned by their father for crimes they had committed. Players are engaged in uncovering the mystery surrounding a little girl's disappearance, daring to venture deep inside the intense worlds of the villainous brothers. Understanding their motives is key to the success of the investigation and will be a true "revelation."

5.0 out of 5 stars Back on Track, 7 Oct 2004
By G. Coupe "Geoff Coupe" (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After the somewhat disappointing Uru games, Cyan and Ubisoft have gone back to the Myst roots for Myst IV. The result is a solid offering of a great game. There is a strong story (reaching back into the very first Myst), and the puzzles are well itegrated into the storyline. This is unlike some other recent titles in the Adventure Game genre, where mind-numbing puzzles seemed to be the sole raison d'etre. For me, such games literally lost the plot - they took the adventure out of the phrase "Adventure Game".

Myst IV has a plot - and at least three endings according to choices you will make. The story revolves around the disappearance of Yeesha (the heroine of Uru) when she was a young girl. Fortunately in Myst IV, the makers have backpedalled to a large degree on the New Age mysticism (read: mumbo-jumbo) that I found so tiresome and irritating in Uru.

Visually, as one has come to expect of Cyan, it is breathtaking, with a high degree of realism. The little touches adding to the illusion of reality are often quite subtle, such as the shadows of clouds altering the light on the landscape, or the trees stirring slightly in the breeze. Then there are effects such as the sea breeze whipping up sand from the beach, or the sounds made when things are touched. And this episode of Myst makes a lot of use of naturalistic animated animals to bring the environments to life.

Aurally, it is also excellent, with both music and ambient sounds adding to the impact.

The degree of difficulty of the puzzles varies widely (at least that is how it seemed to me). Some are relatively straightforward (but still satisfying) while some seemed to hark back to the mind-numbing puzzles of Riven. And, alas, three puzzles relied on physical dexterity with the mouse - which for me at least is an exercise in screaming frustration (if you've ever battled with the damn fireflies in Uru, you'll know what I mean). What makes it worse is that one puzzle has a time limit to complete it.

Technically, the game is pushing the envelope, so unless you have a well-specced system and the latest drivers, you may have problems. On my system, the game crashed until I disabled the secondary monitor, and it gives a sound board error on loading, which fortunately is not fatal, and which can be ignored. The sheer degree of realism that is packed into the graphics also means that you'll need a DVD drive to load the two DVD discs that the game comes on.

Overall then, a solid game that shows why the Myst series is synonymous with the best that the Adventure Game genre can offer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but ..., 20 Jan 2005
A beautiful game as one might expect - and the puzzels are as infuriating as ever. However too many of them are reliant on manual dexterity more than intellectual solution. i.e. it took a bit of thought to work out what one had to do and frustrating ages to actually do it. I dont mind a bit of 'manual' labour but the balance was wrong in this one. On a practical note I had problems at first in that the second disc would not load on my DVD player - it turned out I need a new player that could read double density DVD's - it made no mention as far as I could see on the box!! One new DVD player later it loaded - so BEWARE this game ould cost u more than u think

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and engrossing with fantastic graphic effects, 17 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This is without doubt the best of the Myst series. The graphics are superb with video sequences with real actors giving a sense of reality not found in purely graphic games, such that you really feel part of the game. The puzzles are intriguing, sometimes difficult but always a logical part of the game. A game for those who prefer to use brain rather than reaction.

It's a visually stunning puzzle/mystery game but that can't save it from being so dull like all the other Myst games. The in game acting is also good but only in the ironic sense.
