Product Description

CD Description

This release is the follow up to 2002's first post-reformation album 'The Process Of Belief'. Containing the original line-up including punk legends Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz the band show that they can still be angry after 20 years together. Fueled by the political situation of 2002-2004 theband rally against war, George Bush, religion and similar targets to a soundtrack of fast, melodic poppy punk rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Fine Release, 4 Sep 2004
The following review was written by me for The Metal Garage http://www.themetalgarage.tk

Bad Religion have done the same thing as the likes of AC/DC, Motorhead, Cannibal Corpse, by finding out what they're good at, and sticking to it for their entire career, and for Bad Religion that thing is punk rock. So with this, their fifteenth studio album, we should all know what to expect.

'The Empire Strikes First' begins with a slightly gothic intro, before kicking off to the speedy punk-fuelled 'Sinister Rouge', and 'Social Suicide'. Brett Gurewitz and Greg Graffin have always been praised for their song writing skill, and rightly so. There is a good variation of songs here, from the fast opening songs, the mid-tempo rock songs like 'To Another Abyss' and the slightly moving 'Boot Stamping On A Human Face', and the catchy sing along single 'Los Angles Is Burning', with it's sweet harmonies that are present on most Bad Religion songs. This variation is more than enough to keep the album interesting, with all the songs being of a decent quality.

Like many punk bands have been recently, Bad Religion have focussed their lyrics on the happenings of George Bush, but unlike most, Greg Graffin's lyrics are well thought out and intelligent. I've never been a fan of political lyrics but Greg Graffin at least knows what he's talking about. It's not all political though, with other topics being moral and social issues and about the world in general.

This is typical Bad Religion, and any fan of the band or punk rock in general will enjoy Empire Strikes First.

Darren Morrison

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing album from Bad Religion!, 10 Jun 2004
Wow. This band never fails to impress. Unlike The Process of Belief, which had some amazingly good tracks and some very weak tracks, this album is all consistently good. No weak tracks on this one at all.

1. Overture 9/10 - Cool build-up to...

2. Sinister Rouge 10/10 - One of the best on the album, sounds like something from Generator. The goth choir is cool.

3. Social Suicide 9/10 - Strong track, title stolen from "Sensory Overload" from their first album.

4. Atheist Peace 10/10 - Another amazing track, great lyrics and a good message.

5. All There Is 10/10 - My second favourite on the CD, definitely has the best lyrics.

6. Los Angeles Is Burning 10/10 - Catchy song with a cool video, supposed to be released as a single on 23rd May, where is it?

7. Let Them Eat War 10/10 - HIP HOP? ON A BAD RELIGION SONG? I was shocked when I heard about it, but it does work. Another great song.

8. God's Love 9/10 - Just another strong track.

9. To Another Abyss 10/10 - Cool song, with elements of progressive rock - reminds me of "Into the Unknown", which I loved.

10. The Quickening 8/10 - Weakest song on the disc, it's by no means bad but it's nothing special.

11. The Empire Strikes First 9/10 - Really catchy chorus, but loses points for the cheesy lyrics (I already know how to spell E-M-P-I-R-E, thanks).

12. Beyond Electric Dreams 10/10 - My favourite on the disc, very catchy and generally just cool.

13. Boot Stamping On a Human Face Forever 8/10 - I like the way the lyrics are written, music is different but not particularly good.

14. Live Again (the Fall of Man) 10/10 - Best outro since "Cease".

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Process!, 9 May 2004
You may have heard them poor quality mp3s from badreligion.net and thought it was a good album. I then got hold of a copy and this is more than just a good album. It has elements from throughout BRs career i.e songs such as 'sinister rouge' and 'atheist peace' sound like they should have been tracks for 'generator' while BR throw some 'New America' into here too with tracks such as 'LA is Burning' and 'Let them Eat War'. In addition to this BR throw some unexpected surprises in there such as the highly experimental 'Beyond Electric Dreams' and also the two relatively slow songs but hell are they powerful.
Overall, their second best album in my opinion only beaten by the mighty generator but one thing is for sure; this album leaves The Offspring and such bands sounding like a bunch of sissy crap and no matter what your friends may tell you THIS IS BETTER THAN THE PROCESS OF BELIEF BY FAR!
If you enjoy this album then try other BR albums you will not be let down.
