The Hip may remain Tragically under-valued in the UK but they keep on producing fantastic and distinctive rock albums and "In between Evolution" continues that tradition. As with most of their output, the album needs a few listens to fully appreciate, but,as usual, the effort is worthwhile. The trademark Hip elements are all there - intelligent yet obscure lyrics, gritty vocals and the mix of rocking tracks with a great groove with more gentle and experimental tunes. However, it is pleasing to note that this is actually the most heavy and rocking Hip album for some time. Its predecessor, In Violet Light, was a rather mixed effort of top quality highs but also a few lows. This is a more consistent album and a real return to form. Opening track "Heaven is a Better Place" sets the scene perfectly - three minutes of catchy, quality, earthy rock and a real highlight. "Summer's Killing us" maintains the high standard and "Gus the Polar bear from Central Park" has some splendid guitar work (to go with its somewhat bizarre title)! "Vaccination Scar" maintains the high standard and is a very good example of just what the band are about. Other highlights are rockers "Makeshift we are" and "Heart of the Melt" while "Are we family" is a typical Hip slower number, far more relaxed musically, but maintaining typical lyrical intensity. The album finsihes in suitably climactic manner with "Goodnight Josephine" a track which uses light and shade beautifully, and whose rather up-lifting nature is enhanced by the somewhat unexpected (although rather subtle)horn section.
In summary - this is another top quality rock album by a marvellous band. Hip fans will love it, but at this late stage it is probably too much to hope that "In Between Evolution" will win them too many more fans in the UK. Which, quite frankly, is tragic!
