Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

One of the new additions to the Cyber-shot range of digital cameras from Sony, the DSC-P93 represents a dramatic leap in operational speed and Stamina power efficiency for point-and-shoot digital photography. With a resolution of 5 Megapixels, the camera takes advantage of Sony's new Real Imaging Processor. This offers more precise, better picture quality results at a higher operation speed and with up to 50% improved power consumption. Easy to use, with most functions like focus and exposure set automatically, these models have the ability to help you to take a perfect picture for almost every occasion, featuring six pre-set Scene Selection modes. The camera also offers excellent value for money as it comes supplied with 2 rechargeable Ni-MH batteries and a charger.

The Real Imaging Processor is the key technology that sets the new Cyber-shot models apart from the competition. Engineered by Sony to improve Stamina (efficient power consumption) by up to an amazing 50 percent over previous models, it works in conjunction with the supplied Ni-MH batteries to provide up to a massive 440 shots on just one charge. As well as longer battery life, the Real Imaging Processor enables the camera to speed up operations such as start up time, shutter interval and shutter release time, meaning that you'll be far less likely to miss that important shot. The image quality is also improved by the new processor, with the result that pictures have improved focus, at the correct exposure and will display more faithful colour reproduction. On top of that it allows the Cyber-shot P93 can shoot a burst of fifteen images in Standard quality mode, and nine images in Fine quality mode.

The Real Imaging Processor also enables the Cyber-shot model to record high-resolution video using MPEG Movie VX Fine (640 x 480, 30 frames per second), which is great for played back in full-screen on a TV. MPEG Movie VX Fine is dependant on the use of optional Memory Stick Pro storage, but the recording time is only limited by the capacity of the media.

The Cyber-shot P93 includes a superb 5.1 effective Megapixel Super HAD CCD. Additionally, the Cyber-shot P93 takes advantage of a 3 x optical zoom lens. The built in manual exposure mode on the Cyber-shot P93 allows more experienced photographers even more flexibility if so required.

Shots in difficult conditions are now worry-free with six different Scene Selection modes. These settings allow you to automatically prepare the camera to match the demands of the shooting situation and are preset for occasions like a trip to the beach (Beach mode) or for example with the new Candle mode great for pictures taken during a candle-lit birthday. Other modes include Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap and Landscape. You'll always be sure of a clear picture too, as the cameras use five focussing points in the frame for auto focus performance to have more accurate focus and a sharper image.

To get more out of the Cyber-shot range, Sony also offers a variety of optional accessories. The MPK-PEA Marine Cyber-shot housing allows shooting underwater at up to 40 meters depth. Improve lighting with the HVL-ML20M underwater light and attach the VF-MP5K colour filter for enhanced underwater colours. For more shooting creativity the VAD-PEB lens adaptor enables the attachment of 30mm lenses and filters to the Cyber-shot P93, such as our new VCL-DH2630 2.6x tele conversion lens.

Sony products are designed to connect quickly to each other and to the world beyond so that users can easily enjoy the benefits of digital networking. Digital images in the new Cyber-shot range can be saved to removable storage in the form of Sony Memory Stick and the optional Memory Stick PRO, capable of transferring your images between a wide range of Memory Stick compatible products. Additionally the cameras are equipped with a USB 2.0 hi-speed interface, which connects the camera by cable to a compatible PC for fast image transfers. The handy AV out feature on the Cyber-shot camera allows simple connection directly to a TV. All three Cyber-shots in the range also support the industry standard PictBridge technology. This makes it possible to connect directly with a PictBridge printer (such as the Sony DPP-EX50) via the USB cable, enabling you to print your images quickly and easily without using a PC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camera at a great price!!, 19 May 2004
I have had the P93 for several days now and have found it to be faultless in every respect. When researching which camera I should buy I found the many different DSC models on offer from Sony very confusing. Even when I decided that I preferred 5 mega pixels I still had to chose between the P92, the P93, the P10 and the P12. Ultimately my decision came down to the fact that the P93 is the most recent to be manufactured and therefore has a few extra features (ie. 5 point autfocus as opposed to 3 on the P10, a more expensive model) and the fact that it's predecessor, the P92 on which the P93 is based, won several awards such as "Best Budget Buy" in Computer Shopper Magazine. Furthermore, I discovered that the battery systems used in similar models such as the P10 and P12 are in fact much more complicated and expensive to replace whereas the P93 uses AA rechargeables and still has an excellent batery life. The main 'advantage' of other cameras at a higher price point is that they are more compact but having used the P93 out and about I have found that it easily perches in the palm of my hand, is breeze to operate one handed and slips into the pocket of my jeans when I'm done snapping. Therefore the benefits of any smaller camera are dubious as to me it seems likely that they would merely become fiddly. Therefore, this is a technologically advanced and well designed camera at an attractive price with an award winning pedigree!!!! What more could you want????? Other reviews have mentioned the poor design of the USB cover, which i must agree, does seem excessively flimsy but should last OK provided that it's handled carefully. The only other problem I've had is that as the P93 is a new model, there are few accessories, especially cases, that come recommended for it. In this respect, I have bought a Sony LCS-PEA soft case in the hope that as it is recommended for the P92 and the dimensions look similar then it should fit OK. A memory upgrade is essential to at least 128 mb as it seems a waste to buy a 5.1 Mega pixel camera and then to have to reduce quality to enable you to fit more pictures on the inadequate 32mb memory stick that Sony supply. Also, I would recommend purcahsing another 2 Sony rechargeable AA's as they are cheap and will ensure that you never need to miss a shot due to dead batteries. Overall, if you're looking for a 5 Mega pixel camera, from a top brand and at a great price, then you can't go far wrong here. I hope I've been of some help!

    5.0 out of 5 stars Sony Cybershot DSC-P93, 11 May 2004
    By A Customer
Well what can I say, best camera ever I have bought to date in terms of price functions and brand reliability. Only had this for 1 week and am more that please with it. The picture quality is outstanding don’t believe what the pros say they are too picky with the smallest functions which we consumers wont even care about, all we want is a good quality picture end of the day.
Most answers people need to know about this review I would think are,

Battery life is excellent better than I expected shot pictures at 5million pixels for full 80 minute including flash and LCD screen on also reviewing pictures at the same time, you can turn the LCD colour down to dark but can still see it and save even more power if you wish.

Takes the best indoor low light pictures ever for a compact, even better than my Fuji film finepix s602 that cost me £500 when it came out.

Powerful flash, as the outer lens magnifies the beam even more.

Super fast auto AF FOCUS AND MACRO you don’t even notice the camera adjusting to every environment its so fast at processing.

It takes for me 12 x pictures at 5mp on a 32mb memory stick (supplied) and 22 pictures at 3.2mp. You can also select 3mp 1mp and vga
Fine or standard modes. I always leave it on 5mp, although 3.2MP is better that my Fuji film finepix camera at 6mp honest.

From first turn on it only takes 1sec to be ready to shoot with flash.
Then from the moment you press the shutter button its all over and saved to memory card in 0.5 - 0.8 sec very fast.

Very light weight robust and good looking small camera, just the right size for average hands not too small and not too big.
The best LCD screen I have ever seen so much detail and gives almost a DVD quality still picture.

Movie mode is 30fs almost TV quality, with digital quality sound, and a bright picture the best i have ever seen.

    Negatives

Close up macro is good picks up fine detail, but can get blurred sometimes when a flash is used. But takes better close macro pictures on manual setting.

Plastic/rubber flap for usb port easy to snap off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy, 2 Dec 2004
I was a bit reluctant to hand over so much cash for a camera, but when you go travelling for weeks or months then you really need some way of capturing all the places you see and people you meet.

This camera is suited to all conditions and seems to have a specific setting for every type of picture you want to take, be it of people, landscape, sea ,night etc. Or you can just use the Auto setting and let the camera choose which is best.

I was also very impressed by the battery life/power consumption of this camera (this was the main selling point that convinced me to buy). After only a 5-6 hour charge the 2AA Sony cells are ready for action for over 3 hours of CONTINUOUS use, or over 400 pictures. The fact that it uses standard AA size cells and not a special lithium ion cell also means that you can still use regular cheap AAs.

The hand dial on the top lets you select between modes with ease and the many automated features mean that it is very hard to take a bad picture. I would recommend buying at least a 128MB card to go with this camera as the 32MB card included is ok for the odd day out but for longer trips you need something with more capacity.

I don't use the video function much but it has come in handy for small clips of birthdays.

The high performance and specification of this camera really do make it worth the money and also ensure that you wont need to buy another one for a very long.
