Excellent Camera, 3 Aug 2004
The P73 (2004) in basic terms offers point and shoot capability for photos at 4.1 megapixles, high resolution video with good sound. An ideal camera for a beginner but with a host of features extending its appeal to more advanced users. It is very simple to use, anyone having used a digital camera before can simply start taking pictures out of the box, however the advanced features will require a bit of time to understand fully. Don't be put off, these features aren't essential and the camera will take stunning shots with even the most untrained photographer behind it. Sony may well boast about its new Super HAD CCD and Real Imaging Processor, all this really means to most users is that its the latest technology so you can be sure the camera's picture quality is excellent, you can easily print 8 by 10 inch prints to hang on the wall with excellent detail and colouring. It performs very well in all light conditions and is one of the best digital cameras for taking indoor photos with poor lighting I have seen. On the outside the camera is well built, with a sturdy plastic shell, the Sony lens projects out of the front about 3/4 of an inch and once closed the lens is automatically covered for protection, it's also small enough to fit in your pocket. The rear LCD screen is very good, but as with all LCDs it can be hard to see in bright sunlight, fortunately the camera is equipped with an optical viewfinder. It is powered by two AA batteries, with excellent battery life, it is indeed capable of the 400 shots from a single charge of the batteries. The only flaw is the memory stick it is supplied with as it only holds 8/9 full resolution photos, an adequate sized memory card (250mb) is about £50. Bundled with the camera is Sony's rechargable batteries and a charger, a wrist strap and a cable to connect it to your TV which is a nice added extra. You'll probably want to buy the accessory set with a spare set of batteries and a soft case which is about £15 from Amazon, although at the time of writing you could get the set free with the camera. At under £200 the Cybershot P73s is a bargain, ideal for beginners and advanced users alike, even with the added cost of an additional memory card and accessory pack, it is excellent value for money and will last you years with care.

Outstanding results for a very reasonable price!, 5 Jul 2004
Launched in May 2004, the DSC-P73 is a state-of-the-art digital camera, replacing last year's P72 in the Sony range. The first change you will notice is a new more compact and rounder design. Other differences include 4 megapixels instead of 3.2 (but if you need 5 megapixels there's the P93), and a new chip called the "Real Imaging Processor" which helps you to get good results in all kinds of conditions. The camera can compress files automatically (if you choose standard instead of fine resolution), so a 4 megapixel photo takes less than 1MB of space in the memory. With a 256MB Pro Memory Stick (not included) and the rechargeable AA batteries (included) you can take more than 200 high quality photos, or upto 10 minutes of reasonable quality video with sound, or any combination (like 100 photos and 5 minutes of video). You can view the images on your TV (cable included) or transfer them to your computer using either the USB cable (also included) or a Memory Stick reader. The P73 is definitely better than previous generations of Sony cameras, and probably the best 4 megapixel camera you can find in this price bracket, although you will need to also buy a Memory Stick Pro (at least 256MB) to fully benefit from the fast transfer speeds and long battery life. I just came back from 11 days on Madeira with 200 absolutely amazing photos, and I didn't have to recharge my batteries once during the whole holiday!

Fantastic camera, would highly recommend, 18 Aug 2004
I was one of the first to buy this particular model (having debated whether to get the outgoing P72 which was greatly reduced in price to clear at the time) but I have to say I think I made the right decision - the quality of photographs (espcially daytime photos) is superb, probably matching professional-quality results. There are a host of advanced options but you don't really need them, the auto function does the job more than 99 times out of 100. Even the exterior design is a work of art, the LCD screen is small but the high quality of it (doesn't blur when camera is moved) more than makes up for this. Coming with batteries and a charger is one less hassle, but you must buy a case with it (you wouldn't want that beautiful silver finish being scratched now!) You must also buy a 256Mb MemoryStick Pro, this will allow you to fully utilise all the features (e.g. high resolution, movie with sound capture etc) Another surprise for me (this is my first digital camera) was the zoom lens: unlike my film camera whereby the lens protrudes further and further out from the casing as you zoom in, the Sony's lens actually moves in slightly! I'm confused myself but it works! One slight gripe: when taking night time shots the flash flashes repeatedly before taking the shot. This often results in people moving, blinking etc. before the photo is taken. Of course, this is common with most new cameras now, I usually solve it by either turning the flash off if poss or just taking another photo to be sure. All in all though, an excellent buy, I would urge you to consider this - great value on Amazon.
