Product Description

CD Description

Debut album, after six years together, from Swedish quartetinspired by the 80s shoegazing sound of My Bloody Valentine, the Cocteau Twins and the Jesus & Mary Chain. Already being hailed as a minor classic, it presents a reserved, melancholy take on the style, refusing to blatantly rock out, but instead creating an intimate, comforting mood. Includes the single 'Where Damage Isn't Already Done'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lesser Matters by The Radio Dept., 14 Oct 2004
By A Customer
First came across this band when returning in form a night out. Was feeling a bit merry and decided to watch a bit of TV. Half asleep and in a bit of a daze, I was roused by the sounds of lush Scandinavian guitar pop. I managed to grab a pen and scrawl down the name of the band. The Radio Dept. Next day I was on Amazon looking for an album.

I was not disappointed with my purchase. Like a lot of bands coming from that part of the world at the moment, everything has a bit of a fuzzy, 'Wall of Sound' vibe to it. They have a sound that mixes the Ravonetts' feed back induced, shoe gazing riffs with Concretes' style musicianship, and upbeat and happy Wannadies, vocals.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a quality album. The kind of music you're not going to get sick of after four or five listens. It's been on my CD player since I got it and sounds a bit different every time I spin it. Well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars The saviours of shoegazing, 29 Oct 2004
By Mike Mantin (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I've only ever seen one instance of The Radio Dept. getting any airplay: on an 'alternative' video collection at 1 a.m. It's a shame, because The Radio Dept. showcase more catchy hooks and alt.cool than almost everyone out there. Each track is drenched in as much awkward fuzz as My Bloody Valentine but- and here's where Kevin Shields' crew slipped up- it's immediately accessible, even if it takes several plays to unravel its perfection.

Tunes are where theses Swedes excel. Singles Why Won't You Talk About It? and Where Damage Isn't Already Done give lush pop melodies a thick fuzzy coating then balance out the loudness with silky vocals that sound like they were recorded on a Fisher Price My First Drone-Rock Mic. It's not all vigorous attacks on feedback-laden guitars: these shoegazers do soft, too. Against The Tide is a delicate ballad with a gorgeous bassline and the volume turned down to 3. It's a soundtrack to gazing up at the stars like the clueless stoners on the front cover. The centerpiece of a truly mesmerising album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something different, 5 Nov 2005
This album takes a while to get into. That has to be bared in mind before you listen to it but it's a great experience once you understand what they are about.

There are alot of electric drum beats with dreamy guitars over the top and a very chilled out vocal. It somehow manages to sound quite lo-fi whilst sounding very well produced and "warm". Sometimes lo-fi can be associated with poor recording but this really isn't the case.

This isn't a CD to put on whilst you have things to do. It's a CD to sit back and enjoy and relax to. It probably isn't for everyone but for people who like groups like AIR (they are not that similar to AIR but the music brings out all the same feelings) this is one to try.
Where Damage isn't Already Done, Ewan and Why Won't You Talk About it are the most main stream sounding songs on the album. They aren't mainstream at all but compared to the rest of the album, these feel like the ones that you could possibly hear on the radio.
It's strange however because alot of these songs fade into the background which is usually a bad thing but it just works on this album. There is nothing else that you would want in the background as this is perfect. There are some very catchy moments that will stick in your head for days and some nice chilled out moments where you just go with it.

Great album!
