4.0 out of 5 stars Raw and raucous Chicago Blues from Muddy in his final studio album, 18 April 2007
King Bee was Muddy's final studio album and so the last album he recorded and produced with Johnny Winter in the Blue Skys trilogy. Bob Margolin, Muddy's guitarist on the album, tells of arguments within the band and Muddy's failing heath in the inside sleeve. Apparently Muddy came into the studio and told the band he wanted the album done in three days and as a result not adequet new material was recorded so songs that had been recorded at the time that the band were making 'Hard Again' that had not yet been released were added to this disc.

However, in spite of this, when i put the disc in my Cd player i was blown away with a raw, powerful version of King Bee in which the whole band including Muddy sounded on top form. The party mood of Hard Again and I'm Ready had gone but this does not seem to detract too greatly from the music and it may have added even more mood and deep sadness to slow blues songs. However, i found that after track 7 the CD gradually went down hill with uninspiring numbers like 'Deep Down in Florida No.2' and 'No Escape From the Blues'.

King Bee is a mixed bag with some fantastic songs like 'King Bee' and the deep and moody 'Sad Sad Day' but also some weak material which appears to have been used to fill out the album when there was a shortage of quality songs. If you don't already own 'Hard Again' and 'I'm Ready' i would stongly advise that they are your first port of call. King Bee is still a good album mainly because it was recorded by the king of the blues backed by one of the hottest bands in the history of electric blues but alongside 'Hard Again' and 'I'm Ready' it is slightly disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Three in a row, 23 Mar 2006

Most classic Chicago bluesmen hit their peak in the 40s and 50s then petered out artistically. Muddy Waters came roaring back in the late 70s though, when he teamed up with Johnny Winter and laid down three classic albums for the Blue Sky label. This is the third of them - and contains the last recordings the great man ever made. They are padded out with some out-takes from earlier sessions, as he was in poor health by this time. Its still terrific stuff though, although not as good as the two previous discs - Hard Again, and Ready. Muddy went out in style however and this is well worth any blues fan's attention.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good latter-day Muddy, 31 Aug 2003

This review is from: King Bee (Audio CD)
"King Bee" is the last of the three late-seventies/early eighties-albums produced by Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter, and it is also a slightly lesser record than its two excellent predecessors, "Hard Again" and "I'm Ready", mainly because the track list isn't quite as strong.

But that doesn't make it a bad album by any stretch of the imagination...66-year old Waters is backed by virtually the same band that he worked with on "Hard Again" and "I'm Ready", and the arrangements are superb, making even somewhat mediocre songs like the light-weight "Champagne And Reefer" and the generic "Too Young To Know" work quite well.

And the good songs certainly outnumber the mediocrities:
There's the classic, shuffling "Mean Old Frico Blues", Muddy Waters' fine take on Slim Harpo's "King Bee", the slow blues "Sad Sad Day", the supremely funky "(My Eyes) Keep Me In Trouble", and the acoustic masterpiece "I Feel Like Going Home" (superb Son House-inspired slide guitar playing by Johnny Winter).

3 3/4 stars...definitely recommended, although it probably shouldn't be your first Muddy Waters-purchase. But a good collection of solid, professionally executed blues music which will certainly appeal to Muddy-fans.
