Synopsis

Set in 1930s China, DRUNKEN MONKEY is a kung fu classic starring Lau Kar Leung as Wen Biao. He plays a security company owner whose brother Wen Bao and villain Yu Haiyang betray him in order to usurp his business for covert opium trafficking. They leave Wen Biao, a Monkey Fist expert, for dead but is tracked down by a couple of martial arts enthusiasts putting together a definitive manual of kung fu. Master Wen is skilled in the art of 'Drunken Monkey Fist' whereby a fighter consumes alcohol to improve skills and resist pain.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 9 May 2007
If you are expecting a mix between Drunken Master and Monkey then look elsewhere. This film isn't very funny and doesn't feature much in the way of good fight scenes. As an insight into the Monkey style it is interesting but as a piece of entertainment it is sadly lacking and it seems to gloss over the fluid motions required in drunken boxing. Some of the body-double fight switches between the old man actor and the guy who can perform spinning kicks etc. are laughable and most of the choreography is dull. This is not comparable to vintage Jackie Chan and indeed is not comparable to some of its contemporary contenders within the same genre.
