5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous 5th, 29 April 2008
What comes to Russian classical masters it is Valery Gergiev who is the surest pick for the conductor. We've seen it in Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Prokofiev, not to forget the superb Rite of Spring by Stravinsky (Philips). And now there's another hit, Shostakovich's legendary 5th. It is already the opening moderato wich shows that Kirov orchestra is the orchestra for Shostakovich (also a born Peterburgian). Gergiev adopts the middle ground what comes to tempo in moderato (faster than Rostropovich, slower than Mravinsky, Berstein or Previn). But the most astonishing is largo. There Gergiev manages to build such a tense feeling of sorrow and angs that one can't compare it to any other take. Of course we can't listen the legendary premier by Mravinsky in Leningrad but with Gergiev one can try to imagine the feelings burst out by the symphony in the middle of the most harsh period of Stalin's terror. It is because of the largo that the closing allegro succeeds so well in Gergiev. There's anymore no need for low tempo stressed by Rostropovich. (You'll find the difference by listening those two takes after each other.) Finally, the sound of the recording is really fine. The disc is hybrid SACD, so playable also in ordinary cd-players.
