This is a must for any Bruckner fan! Wash away any pre-conceived ideas on how this symphony sounds like because it's so completely different to the more usual dour and solemn Bruckner we usually hear.
Anybody familiar with the piece in it's more popular, later versions will detect that the first, second and last movements have their main themes retained, but completely reworked. Bruckner composed a completely different scherzo. Fortunately the later "hunting horn" scherzo is of equal stature to this original movement.
Even though the acoustics are a little dry, the orchestral sound is fantastic. With suitable "raspy" brass sound, ideal for this music. And you can hear what the woodwind section are doing in the loud sections.
Tempi are on the brisk side, which is suitable for this particular work, which lacks the more spritual side of later Bruckner, in favour of a more brighter orchestration, more typical of his early works.
Very individual. Very good value for money. Worth having in your collection....
