| 1. Diplipito for violoncello, countertenor and Orchestra (1997) |
| 2. Valse Boston for piano and strings (1996) |
The new album features premiere recordings, made with the composer's participation, of two major works, Valse Boston (1996) & Diplipito (1997). Both give evidence of the ongoing trend by Kancheli to simplify the musical lang-uage, strip the works of any superfluity, and tighten the focus for maximum emotional impact.
Kancheli, a composer whose control of dynamics is second to none, is particularly well served by ECM's peerless production values. Here masterful orchestral writing is matched by masterful recording quality, every nuance meticulously registered.
"Don't let the innocuous title fool you: Giya Kancheli's Valse Boston is a powder keg of a piece" wrote the Chicago Tribune after a live performance. "It is a secular prayer veering between extremes of dynamics, tempo and mood."
Commissioned by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Valse Boston is dedicated to conductor Dennis Russell Davies who is also the piano soloist. Kancheli and the American conductor are old friends: Davies was one of the first westerners to recognise the potential of Kancheli's music.
Dennis Russell Davies has conducted four previous, much praised Kancheli recordings for ECM New Series: 'Trauerfarbenes Land', 'Caris Mere', 'Abii ne viderem' and 'Vom Winde beweint'.
Diplipito features exceptional playing from another of New Series' major artists, Swiss cellist Thomas Demenga, and outstanding singing from prize-winning American countertenor Derek Lee Ragin, making his ECM debut.
Recorded 2001
Personnel:
Thomas Demenga - (cello), Derek Lee Ragin - (countertenor), Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Dennis Russell Davies (conductor)
