Product Description

All Music Guide
Hurt No More is full of surprises. Not only is it a Mario Winans record with a parental advisory sticker, it's also a Bad Boy release with production and instrumental duties handled by one person. That person is Mario Winans, whose return as a solo artist was announced by a Top Five single that is literally haunted by the spirit of Enya circa 1987. Primarily a producer and multi-instrumentalist, with numerous credits for big-name gospel and secular artists alike, Winans' rebirth as a solo artist--after a false start with Motown in 1997--is as rich as humbled, sincerely sensitive, male R&B gets in 2004.

Lead single "I Don't Wanna Know" trumps Ruben Studdard's "Sorry 2004" as the most touching R&B single by a broken-spirited male, made by a subdued drum pattern, Enya's ambient presence, a sprinkle of piano, and Winans' hushed, pained vocal, which begs his woman to keep her infidelities low-key. Winans has experience making a wide range of music for others, but he excels most at creating slow, sophisticated grooves for himself. Songs of this kind make up most of this album, and that aspect has a lot to do with why this record is successful. Winans doesn't wear the few harder-edged numbers so well--"Pretty Girl Bullsh*t" featuring an ill-matched verse from Foxy Brown, is particularly out-of-character and disrupts the lush, sensual flow of the record. Though a couple minor blunders like that hardly prevent Hurt No More from being one of the finest R&B albums of the year. --Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a must, 5 Jul 2004
By Lady Gee (London, UK) - See all my reviews
There is a very few artists out there who can do half as much as Mario Winans can:produce, write, remake, remix, and finally sing. I was completely blown away by Marios first album back in 1997 and eagerly awaited "Hurt no more". When I heard "I don;t wanna know" back in December I knew it was going to be one of the best RnB tracks of 2004! I set it up back then as background music to my answering machine and had so many people asking me "wot is that wicked tune"!!! Now they know.

Mario Winans sings with so much emotion and from the serious depth of his heart so that you can completely feel his pain and get lost in his songs. His voice is so beautiful it's like birds singing on a brihgt early summer morning. There is a very few male singers in RnB that can match Mario Winans' quality. He is on the same level as Donell Jones & RL from Next, and although I love Usher, Usher doesn;t have that depth of emotions and sadness in his voice to really show that his heart is breaking, like Mario WInans' and Donell Jones's can.

Working as a DJ, I have realised qwuickly that the only people disliking Mario are playahatas and mucho men, who think emotions are waste of time. If you are one of those brothers who prefer violence to love, you are NOT going to like Mario Winans. But that is a huge reason why women so do. Cos Mario's is a real man, who has emotions, and is NOT afraid to show them.

This album is simply beautiful. My second favorite track "Never really was" so intelligently uses Madonna's sample and from a perfect 80's pop tune rises into a perfect naughty's RnB jam! Only Mario and Bad Boy can make that happen. (Remember "I'll be missing you"? Nuff said.)

So basically I am trying to say, if you want and know quality, this album is a must in your collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected, 16 Sep 2004
It has been a long struggle for Mr Winans to reach this level of fame that he clearly deserves. I have been a huge fan of his production work since R Kelly's self titled album in 95. If you had the Motown album released in 97, you will probably be slightly dissapointed at how "pop" this new album is. Still, very strong vocally and some good appearances including Loon and Slim from 112. If you like this you will LOVE the first album. Look out for the return of New Edition on Bad Boy, Bobby Brown is not in the line up but Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe (BBD), Ralph Tresvant (of the Bobby Brown Posse), and Bobby Gill are one of the greatest group of vacalists you will ever hear (after Jodeci, Playa, Boyz II Men and Tony Toni Tone).
